So, its that time of year. I've been getting emails about spring bulbs the last few weeks and am now planning what i'll get this year for next.

Bluebells, crocuses and snowdrops are on the menu, some quite nice colours to choose. Has anyone recommendations for something nice for the spring?

I'm also looking this year for Alliums, the bigger ,taller and more showy the better! Anyone see Allium "Round and Purple" for sale in Ireland online or in a shop in Dublin or Wicklow?, it proving hard to track down.

I would recommend all that you mention and of course some daffodils and narcissus. It's a great sight to see those first snowdrops after a long winter. I have found that the crocuses dont seem to spread very well for me, prob just dont like the soil. And bluebells the opposite, they are quite vigorous/invasive. From being originally planted under trees at the end wall of the garden they have spread massively. Bluebell patches have sprung up in my lawn, flowerbeds and veg plots even though they are a good 30m away. But the sea of blue in April is worth this small inconvenience.

This reminds me of the Montbretia that I do annual battle with every winter when digging over the flower beds, I think I got every last blasted bulb..but every year I'm proved foolish and wrong by them!
I wouldn't mind little bluebells everywhere in the spring at least until its time to start planting the veggies.
Snowbells are little lights of hope in the depths of winter hinting at the beautiful flower filled days of right now I suppose and I cant wait to get sowing loads of them in every nook and cranny i can find :)

Cripes you're on the ball, it's still july! (Just about!)

I love muscari in spring, i think it's underrated. The very small narcissii i really like too. Bright white for those dull mornings and evenings is what I go for.

That allium is going to be very hard to come by here. Try mail order from the uk?

That crowd are good for alliums. If they don't have what you are looking for online, give them an email. They don't list all stock all the time.

Thanks, I'll send them an email and see if they have any.
I agree about the white Narcissus, haven't grown them before and I think that would be nice, too much yellow ones can be a bit boring. Am also planning a technicolor carpet of crocus's [sic ?] next spring to say goodbye to winter!.

    Hi

Mr Middleton is having his open day tomorrow (short notice) Sept. 6th. Check his website. Went last year and got really good and unusual bulbs. going again tomorrow. Huge selection to choose from. very unusual daffodils, and aliums - the really tall ones. Starts at 10 and finishes at 5. Well worth a visit.

    Hi,

I've just received some Muscari and Alliums from Irish Plants Direct they are online and in Ireland. I have bought a good few plants from them this year and have found there plants to be great value in comparison to others I have used. They might be worth a look if you haven't already ordered.

Not bulbs, but we bought some cheap Hellebore plants in Lidl last year. They come into their own in Winter and flowered for months, right through Spring. It was lovely to have some colour in the garden in the Winter months. Bulb wise, I usually plant a lot of hyacinths and tulips.
