Beekeeper visiting Dublin from U.S.

    Hello,

I'm a beekeeper from the Seattle area. I'll be in Dublin for the month of August and would like to meet Irish beekeepers to learn how beekeeping is done in Ireland.

Some of my beekeeping interests are natural beekeeping and Warre hives. I'm also a carpenter and I've built (and kept bees in) many types of hives.

I would be interested in helping to build beekeeping equipment if someone has a woodworking shop and materials.

I would also like to attend any beekeeping association meetings or events in August.

Feel free to reply to this thread, or send me a private message if you'd like to get in touch.

    Thanks,
    Darren

Probably not the answer you were looking for but, you've just missed out on the biggest event of the Irish beekeeping year... FIBKA's week long beekeeping summer school. A great mix of lectures, workshops and socialising. This year's guest lecturer was Thomas Seeley. It finishes tomorrow.

    Anyway, in August...

In August, the only unusual thing that I can currently think of is that FIBKA, again, will have a stand at the trade show part of the Dublin horse show... a big, big event in the horse world, held at the RDS in Dublin from 6th August this year. Particularly if you had an interest in seeing the horse show it could be an opportunity to meet some other beekeepers early in your stay - maybe other opportunities would present themselves from there. I'd recommend the horse show anyway - even for non horse-people.

Other than that, individual associations may have events on... Have a browse around FIBKA's website (linked above)... they will have links to most of the other association websites.

    Enjoy the trip!

    Thanks Brianmc,

Yes my timing is a bit off. I enjoy Thomas Seeley's work very much!

The Louth BKA has a Facebook page and they have a meeting every Thursday evening at the apiary in Dundalk near the M1, about 40mins drive from Dublin.

Thanks, bpmurray, I appreciate the info. I'm staying in Dun Laoghaire and using public transit, so not sure I'll make it that far north, as it is 2 - 3 hours by DART/bus.
