Voluntary work when on social welfare

I have a friend who at the moment is unemployed. They have a chance to do some voluntary work with a charity they support. This voluntary work would help them learn new skills which would give them a chance to gain employment. This work would possibly be for 2 mornings or afternoons a week.
Does anyone know how social welfare would regard this? What would they need to say or do for social welfare to allow this?
Has anyone here got any advice in regards to this?

call you into the office where you sign on and ask for/ about the application form to part take in unpaid voluntary work. ( possible it available online)
this will need to be fill out and sign by the the place where they will be going and depending on location it will need to be mailed to particular welfare branch, which will then contact you friend with letter of approval valid for 6 months. which can be renewed again after that period.

Had a friend who did this recently, a week after she got approval they put her onto TUS scheme so is able to do 12 months with the place she want to go.

information from the source of how to go about it

    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Voluntary-Work-Option_holder.aspx

    this should be the form
    http://www.volunteer.ie/downloads/Social_Welfare_VW1_form.pdf

they would need to ask tho where it needs to be returned to tho
