    Hi all,
If my tax is up on the 31st of August do I have to have it taxed before that date or do I have until the end of September to tax it before going into arrears?

    Many thanks!

You'll have to back-tax it to the start of September, so it won't end up saving you any money. And risk having the car taken off you if it's driven in the meantime.

    Thanks.
So does that mean the old 30 day grace period is gone to tax a vehicle before it's officially untaxed?
If I tax it in September do I still get charged arrears because it's not done before the 31st of August?

Couldn't tell you for sure. Also pretty sure that grace period thing was never official. Citizens Information would have all these answers.

There was no official grace period with out of date tax. If stopped at a checkpoint it would be down to the Garda's discretion whether or not to issue a fine. If it was out by a month or less most Garda would tell you to get it taxed asap and possibly take your details. If it was out by 2 months or more then they would be within the law to impound the car there and then.

Also if it is expired by only one day a traffic warden or Garda can still issue you with a ticket for non displaying of a current valid tax disc.

    Thanks bazz,
I may just get it taxed before the 31st so just to be sure.
    Thanks again.

If your tax is out by 31st August, then you want to tax your car for next period before end of August to keep it road legal.

If you wait with taxing till September, you still won't be due any arrears, but you won't be able to drive your car legally until you tax it.

If you decide to delay taxing your car till October, then you will have to pay arrears for month of September.
