this has happened tonight using a streaming app and casting it to my tv.

Never came across this before and not really sure how to stop/fix it.

Could it be my phone causing the problem? Neo N003

Just means somehow there are 2 devices on your network using the same IP address. Are you using anything with a static address? Could be there's a static address being used that's covered by your DHCP range?

Not sure how IT literate you are, if what I said above sounds like gobbledygook just reboot the router and your phone, chances are it will sort it.

Yep,gobbledygook and will follow your advice, thanks.

Will this cure it permanently though?

ehm....hard to say, it depends on what's causing the problem.

In short (kinda) all devices on your network are identified by what's supposed to be a unique (on your network) ip address so the data knows where to go.

Your wireless router has what's called a DHCP router which hands out these addresses to your phone, laptop, pc etc. etc.
Normally this keeps track of what's what and what's using which address to stop conflicts as 2 devices shouldn't use the same address. These are called dynamic addresses (DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

It's also possible to have what's called a static address which means it's always the same, you would have had to set this manually (you'd probably remember having done this) as opposed to the dynamic ones handed out by your router.

If you had set a static address on a device within the range of address that the router is configured to use this conflict situation could happen.

More likely than not though this will sort it, if not permanently at least for a good while, especially if you haven't rebooted the router for a long time.

(sorry not a short explanation but hopefully a somewhat clear explanation at least)

Quite an explanation and i understand it better now.

Router rebooted and we will see how it goes, would it be good practice to turn off wifi on the two house mobiles while casting streaming app, this would eliminate the two device conflict issue i assume?

No it really shouldn't matter. The router has a pool of addresses to choose from and should make sure that no 2 devices end up with the same address. Unless you're using a very cheap or old router and have tonnes of wireless devices in the house.

Sometimes it just happens that a device holds onto an address longer than it should.

If there is only one device connected to the wifi you should not get an ip address conflict, but you really shouldn't need to disconnect all other devices.

Laptop, two phones and an on demand connector is what runs off the Sky router.

Will try again later to see if the conflict happens again and if so I will have to educate myself via the Web to fix it.

You must have a static IP set up on a device in your network.

Can I suggest a Network discovery App, like Fing, link below:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing&hl=en

Here is a screenshot of what was found in my network just a few minutes ago....

you get this upon launching the App:

    Screenshot_2014-07-30-23-17-44.png

It shows my network WiFi SSID at the top, and below that the devices and IP addresses, like

    the Chromecast [DHCP IP]

Android Phone [actually my Nexus Tablet] [DHCP IP]

PC, which has a static address,

LG Smart TV, another static address

    Motorola Router, [Gateway IP Address]

The Static addresses shown are outside the range of DHCP IP's handed out by the Router, which can be modified......

see pic below, showing the router DHCP Configuration page, under Expert mode [eircom Netopia/Motorola Router]

    Screenshot%202014-07-30%2023.43.59.png

his shows I have limited my DHCP IP addresses to the range:

    192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.200

So, the PC and the LG TV have Static IP addresses I set up, outside the 198.168.1.200 upper limit I set for DHCP in the router.

Hope this explains stuff a little.

Let me know if you need more info.
