With the deaths on roads statistics, do they even bother looking at the amount of vehicles on the months when they compare year on year?

Figures of road deaths are bad whichever way you paint them, But it annoys me when they are used in such a poor manner to paint policy and increase budgets.

for example how many cars were taxed aug 2013 to aug 2012.

Over the past two years I'd say I have seen a speeding van on less than 8 occasions. I have seen a Garda with a speed gun twice. I have never hit a checkpoint for tax/insurance/NCT inspections and I have never been pulled over randomly.

In the last year I've clocked about 10k miles, in case you're wondering if I leave my home. Where are all these penalty point being racked up?!

(Im aware that Im tempting fate and could possibly have 12 points tallied up by Monday.)

I drive 3000 miles a month and see the garda van every other day along the N4 at Lucan, yet I have never ever once seen a speed van or garda camera along the entire stretch of road between Kilcock and Kinnegad where people speed excessively every single day.

The limit on this road is 80km/h and while I agree that it a bit low and should be 100km/h, none the less it is the law. I stick to this limit daily but on average I get overtaken at speed by 6/8 cars each morning.

If they concentrated on this road once or twice a week, people who tend to speed would be off the road within a month and they would take in a fortune in fines.

It depends on where you live I guess. There is a van parked outside my estate fairly regularly (every 2-3 weeks), largely because its a classic "shooting fish in a barrel" spot and probably generates a small fortune in revenue. This van aside, in my general day to day driving Id say I encounter no more than a couple of vans a months, and I know exactly where they will be parked. I couldnt tell you the last time I went through a checkpoint; Im fairly sure it hasnt been in the past 5 years.

My new commute to work is from Cork city to Lismore and yesterday evening I saw 3 speed camera vans throughout the 45mins journey.

I wonder if insurance companies will adjust to meet this, ie where they ignore 2 points currently will this increase to 3 now?

If they concentrated on that road they would send a message that blind compliance with the law is more important than actual safe driving. Remember that the goal isn't (shouldn't be) to have people driving slowly for the crack, it's to have safer roads.

The seven-point limit will also apply to people who get their first learner permit on or after August 1st.

I always wondered what happens if you had a motorcycle learner permit (Cat A) and a full car licence (Cat B)? If you manage to rack up 7 points are you disqualified for both categories or just the one you have a learner permit for?

If you already have more than 7 points what happens if you apply for a learner permit for a new category?

I think I remember reading that if you are adding to an existing license then you are not considered to be an N driver, but I have nothing to back that up Im afraid!

AFAIK once you have any full licence before friday it qualifies you to not need a novice sticker for any subsequent categories you may pass a test for. You are only a novice in one category until you have two years driving experience whether on a motorbike or in a car or truck.

Those who receive a first full licence from that date will be considered as novice drivers for their first two years.

They will be required to display an N-plate during that time.

I think that this hasn't been properly thought out.
The government needs to do a U-turn on this.

What about the large number of people of other races in the country now.
Being tagged with a N sign for two years is a bit too much to bear don't you think?

Yet another foolish plan, which will only serve to antagonise new drivers and gives leverage to people who enjoy causing problems.

Its bringing us in line with other countries, is it not?

What on earth are you complaining about man?

what's foolish is there is a huge number of L drivers not displaying plates and nothing done about it, it won't be any different with enforcement of N Plates.

Not with very many of them. In Europe the countries/territories that appear to have a compulsory plate and/or restrictions for newly qualified drivers are:
    • France
    • Isle of Man
    • Northern Ireland (which has the novel distinction of actually obliging R drivers to piss off other drivers by driving too slowly)

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was complaining?

I was asking where all the penalty points were being doled out from. We all hear the numbers on the radio every week, but I dont see the enforcement to rack them up. My question was where.

Wexford. From the Arklow bypass to New Ross, you will see at least one per day if not more.

If you got caught speeding before 31st of July will the 2 point penalty stand instead of the 3point penalty
