I just heard an ‘air raid’ siren in Cork airport. Is this typically used to alert the fire crews to something (an emergency or drill)?

Yes most airports have one even some smaller ones. It could be a drill or could be real.

    Or the Russians are coming!

There's no flights inbound/outbound at this time so hopefully a drill!

Probably a regular test of the systems to make sure alarms and phones work.

Routine fire alarm check at an airport.

Becomes an "Air Raid" siren on the internet.

They do that every Sunday evening in Shannon airport.

I was in Birmingham late one night (delayed flight) and they were testing the whole lot...it was an "alarming" experience! :P

In my defence, it sounds exactly like an air raid siren... :P

That's because the crash alarm IS an air raid siren.

Its not a fire alarm, It is a WWII air raid siren, the same as we have in Shannon.

Its function is to act as a crash siren, and its activated by ATC, so when/if you hear it, its either being tested or there has just been an a/c accident.

Think the face palm is in your direction buddy! The OP is correct, every Wednesday they check the Crash Alarm and get what pal?!? It's an Air Raid siren.

So was the air raid siren activated back in 2011 when the commuter plane crashed?

Opening a thread in large print after hearing a routine alarm in an airport is facepalm stuff.

At least look out the window first for signs of aircraft falling out of the sky.
