Depends really, obviously outside i tap ash on the ground and put butts in bins (the tops) when there's none i normally put it on the ground somewhere nobody will see!

In a house with no ashtray or at a house party etc it is always an empty bottle or can!

Always the floor, even when indoors like in a pool hall or karaoke. Ashtrays are rare in Vietnam.

There was once a group of us in a guy's apartment - there was quite a few joints being smoked. Suddenly the smoke alarm went off.
Cue about a dozen stoned people opening windows and flapping arms around ineffectively. The noise was ear-splittingly deafening from the alarm.

Eventually the guy who rented the place got a chair and just ripped the alarm off the ceiling - this stopped the alarm.

For the rest of the night we used the alarm as an ashtray - it seemed like the right thing to do,

Rip the top of the packet of cigarettes.

Can't be done with American packs obviously, but then they get to look rfeally cool when the shake the pack and the slap in on their hand the cigareete just pops out the small ripped bit. So, swings and roundabouts.. fecking yanks and the cool stuff.
