Advice re small car purchase

    Hi,

We need to get a 2nd car, due to a change in family circumstances, we just want to get a small runaround for short trips in and around town. We are currently looking as VW Polos; I'm not allowed post links because I'm a new user but there is one on adverts.ie in Galway, that is a 2004 1.2L VW 5 door hatchback Polo, 47,662 miles for €3,250. Or there is a 2nd hand mini on donedeal, 3 door Mini One 2005, 1.6L Petrol with 60,000 miles on the clock, it has a NI reg the add says VRT will be €550 and the car is advertised for €3400.

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice as to which type of car would offer more reliability, are parts for one a lot more expensive than the other? We had a VW Passat before that problems with the electrics, the memory of the alarm going off consistently in the middle of the night is still fresh in my brain!!

Or is there any other type of car you would recommend, max budget about €5000, (less would be better), with lowest possible mileage and low motor tax,

    Any help much appreciated,
    Kind regards,
    Helga

I would not choose the Mini cooper 1.6L engine, too heavy on fuel.

    VW Polo is good.

What about Skoda Fabia, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta ?

Thanks very much, I'll look into those options now, had just been looking at Polo/Mini's.
    Thanks again!

Have a look for a Toyota Corolla hatchback. 1.4, good engine, build quality, reliability, ticks all the right boxes.

Get a Luna model. Should get an 06 or so for 5k.

An 04 or 05 Ford Fiesta is a great little car and you can usually pick one up with low mileage. My wife has one since 03 and has never had any issues with it. Great little car to drive too, cheap to run.....perfect as a second car.

Plenty of others around with low mileage and well below your budget.
