Question on Rent Supplement?

I am currently living in my friends spare room and he has asked me to start contributing towards his mortgage payments as a way of rent I guess. He seems to think that I would be entitled to apply for the rent supplement but I am not sure? Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.
