    Hi

I need advice on buying a drill for the occasional DIY job around the house. It needs to be able to drill through concrete as well as wood. I can spend max 200€

Another point: I'm a lady and do not have the same strength as a man, so anything weighing more than my body weight is obviously not good :D

    Thanks!

A cheap SDS drill from argos for 60 euros or so would do for the concrete. They are corded type drills and a little heavy but go through concrete like butter. Challenge SDS in argos.

For lighter work around the home lidl have a great little li-ion screwdriver coming up in the next week or so for 24.99. Great for ikea furniture and light would around then home

You would probably still be missing and inbetweener like a drill driver.

You could get all three for under 200 for basic DIY.

Alternatively just get a good drill driver like a makita that will do a bit of everything.

I am a female diy-er, now in my 60s, so my wrists are not as strong as they were :-) and I use electric tools on a regular basis.

For casual diy, even drilling concrete, pretty well any drill will do, if you pay around €50 or so you would be ok. I would suggest though, one is that you get a keyed chuck. They are getting hard to find, but my experience has been that I find the keyless chucks too hard to tighten and untighten these days. You also need a drill with a hammer action for concrete - they mostly have it, but just be sure. You also need concrete bits and wood bits, not expensive for the kind of use you will give them.

For a screwdriver try and get one without the separate battery section - it makes them too heavy. I have a Black and Decker 9.6v screwdriver which is light in the hand - took me ages of explaining to bemused diy shop guys why I did not want one with a separate battery - you have to plug the entire thing in to charge it but I will put up with that for the handiness of it.

I recently bought a Makita 18v Cordless drill and I have to say it is a wonderful machine. It came with 3 batteries, they are quite small and very light, but they are strong and really last a long time.
The drill also has a very handy feature of a LED light that comes on when you pull the trigger, really useful in tight (dark) spaces.

I would highly recommend it, but can't recall its price :o

    I just ordered this one.

    http://www.caulfieldindustrial.com/makita-8391dwpetk-18v-13mm-combi-cordless-drill-with-101-piece-accessory-kit/p-227941pd.html

Did I jump the gun and click the order button before applying due diligence or get lucky with a spur of the moment ordering decision. Have to say the 101 piece set swung it for me but would I have been better of with Lion batteries and a separate bit set for example. ie. Will I suffer buyers remorse? :D

Paid €179.99 inc VAT with free shipping and next day delivery. Think I can reclaim the VAT though on my next VAT return.

The big benefit of Lion battery is it holds it's charge for a very long time when not in use and depreciates much, much slower. For someone who only occasionally uses a drill the lithium ion battery is more advisable.

Caulfields are doing no favours at the price - their general pricing is in "rip-off" territory, but sure it's done now. That said, I bought the exact same one from b&q several years ago with the integrated case accessories (bloody super idea) for about €120. It's a great kit for a general diy enthusiast. You won't be dissapointed.

Not wanting to rain on the parade but this and this would be my preference for a few bob less :o

Feck it anyway. I usually suffer from paralysis by analysis and nothing ever gets bought :D Ah well, I suppose the way to look on it is as if the shipping weren't free and I paid premium shipping to over night it to me. (Assuming they are true to their word and its next day delivery.)
