    Hi.

Does anyone know how long it takes for a body to be released to the family after a sudden death? It's In Dublin if that makes a difference to how quickly the postmortem can happen.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Sorry you even have to ask this question.

If memory serves me right, it was 3 days or so. My experience was over a bank holiday if it makes any difference. My undertakers had a pretty good idea of what was what, it helped no end. If you have decided on the undertakers, they can give you some pointers regarding the timeline.

It depends on the workload of the coroner and usually the type of death.

One family member died of natural causes suddenly early one night and was home the next day as the autopsy was done almost immediately. This was a small, country hospital.

Another family member died in a car accident and it was a few days before they released his body. This was a busy city hospital.

Perhaps the undertaker would have an idea or know who to call for a timeline.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

It was three or four days in our experience (in a city hospital). I had the impression that it was the investigation that followed the autopsy that may have been more affected by the 'busy-ness' of those undertaking it - and it not being a high profile case (which sudden deaths can tend to be) may have slowed it up as well. Sorry for your loss op.

Hi OP Sorry for your loss.... My Sister passed away last Thursday. The death was very sudden as she had came in on Wednesday with a headache to St James hospital. The Post Mortem was carried out the next day by the pathologist in the Hospital. It was done less than 24 hrs after death.

    hope it helps
