I read over the weekend that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated for a 2016 release. The first one is only out in the US & not released here yet.

    This annoy anyone else ?

Can't see why it would considering that a sequel was inevitable.

They kind of have to announce it before details start spilling out. That’s what happens when studios only leave 2 years between films. The sequel is going into pre-production while the first film is still in post-production. The release date for the next film is locked down and there’s no rumour for manoeuvre. If the script isn’t ready, tough, you are shooting it. The marketing/hype machine has to start early for this reason.

We knew there was gonna be a trilogy out of the amazing spider mans before the 1st one came out did we not? I don't mind really, some stuff is inevitable, and sequels and what not can always be cancelled.

They announced an Expendables sequel following positive reception to the original trailer for the first film.

It's marketing first and foremost, further adding to the manufactured hype machine that many publications and viewers alike buy right into. If a sequel is announced before or soon after release, it guarantees some extra column inches for nothing. For viewers, it can communicate a couple of things, like 'ok, it must be good if they're so confident' or 'well, better catch this one if there's a sequel on the way!'. Above all, it simply cements awareness of a franchise's continued existence, and ensure the hype for the first film is quickly replaced by hype for the second. And sequels are almost an inevitability at this point, no more surprising when they're announced (sooner or later) than the reveal of another series of a hit TV show.

Also goes to show how few risks there are in Hollywood these days - films are released and almost guaranteed to be a box office hit, especially when the Marvel name is behind it. When a film does unexpectedly flop, you could well see a previously teased sequel swept under the rug with very little fanfare.

If you look up upcoming blockbusters you'll often see ones with a release date set as much as 2 years in advance. It's big big big money stuff so it requires a lot of planning in advance. I can't imagitne the complexity of the whole marvel release system when there's so many interconnected brands and sequels and prequels and other major releases from Disney to avoid and christ knows what else.
