Well Rabo Bank here don't have any branches. If you bank with them it is all done online so it is possible. See https://www.rabodirect.ie/ as an example. They are a huge Dutch bank operating online banking here only.

Santander is a bank and when I googled it I found this website http://www.santander.co.uk/uk/index/

It's possible it is a similar set up to Rabo here.

Santander in the UK is an amalgamantion of the old Abbey National, National & Provincial, Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester building socieities and is the 5th largest bank with branches on most high streets. I have no idea if they have online only or telephone only accounts but I'd still expect there to be an associated branch even if only a centralsied one. By example, First Direct is the online only version of HSBC (and was set up as a telephone only bank) but it sill has a branch address - that of it's head office in Sheffield.

Has the person given you a branch sort code? xx-xx-xx format.

Where did you "win" the auction. Many sites (eBay for example) caution against payments by Bank Transfer, you lose where ever limited Buyers Protection you have with the site.
