Irony

    Has anybody noticed the irony?

Over the past six years many members, in many sections of this website have been very critical of public servants and the terms and conditions of their employment. There have been dozens of threads, and hundreds of not thousands if posts - many of which have been blistering in their assault of all public service in entirety. Some have been informed, many have been ignorant, and very few have been fair-minded.

Yet, two of the most busiest threads in recent months have been the Garda recruitment thread/forum and clerical positions in the civil service. Given that this community has been so critical of public service, why then such an interest in joining its lowest ranks?

    Is Paddy jealous?

At an extremeeeely wild guess, the folks dissing the public service are not the same folk as those involved in the recruitment threads. Boards has an awful lot of members.

You're making the mistake of assuming that the population of boards.ie are one congruous hive mind who all think and act the same. Believe it or not, different people often have differing opinions, sometimes they even disagree with eachother entirely. Imagine that.

You're also making the mistake of assuming that one cannot be part of the public service and criticise it at the same time. Contrary to Ballymun opinion, the Gardai are not the Gestapo and I know plenty of Gardai who've been quick to criticise waste and inefficiencies within the Gardai and in the public service itself. In fact, they're often the most scathing ones about it because it affects their ability to work effectively.

Is it ironic that out of a few hundred thousand people, some would be critical of the public service, some would want to join the public service and there would be some crossover between the two? No, it's not.

Only an immature or narrow-minded political view would consider it strange at all.

As has been said, it depends on what part of Boards you look on. Not all of Boards is as negative and contrary as AH.

I believe there is a significant cross-over. And I think you are overstating the level of heterogeneity of people who sign up to this site AND post to criticize regarding the public service.

It wouldn't be hard to figure it out. Look at everyone who posts in the garda thread and look at all their past posts. Then you could work out how many are two faced.

(note that i said it wouldn't be hard. It'll be long, but not hard)(hehe)

I guess the broader argument is that criticism of public service is really a manifestation of jealousy. When proivate sector Paddy was doing well - you know the new yearly car, the patio decking, etc etc. - he didn't really care about public sector Paddy's T&Cs. Only when private sector paddy felt the heat, did he suddenly start criticizing - I wonder why (social justice for private sector paddy, the coping class, the squeezed middle).

ah sure, now he may as well become a guard

I think the irony here is that a few post newby is referring to the historical postings of many members in many sections of our community over a six year period.

When anyone criticizes the public sector on here (or anywhere on the internet), one of the first responses is, "If it's so easy, why don't you do it?".

    Well, they are.

Run along there and get us some cold hard facts instead of beliefs. I will be waiting patiently.

Where's the irony? People want to get on the pigs back. Common sense really, it reaffirms how good the public sector have had it, even now.

Those increments haven't gone away, you know. Nor have the very generous pensions etc.

Who is 'Paddy' the op keeps talking about?

Prob Paddy Martin over the road from here up by the 4 cross roads. Awful begrudged that lad.

Well done Mr Beesley - you proved my point. Private paddy is jealous of the increments and pensions - he has to pay such a high tax on his south Dublin semi and 07 BMW

The schism between the masses, created by the elites, is a fertile breeding ground for dissatisfaction and internal foment. The owners of the means of production take glee in pitting worker against worker, between those who fight for their rights and those who cravenly capitulate to the demands of the establishment.
