I always assumed not, but I see them advertising on facebook etc and I don't understand how they would get away with that if it's illegal.

As long as you are not card sharing or using a dogey softcam then it's legal.

So basically they're "legal" on a technicality?

No, they are legal as they are.

As posted above, if you start tinkering with the firmware to enable cardsharing, then your in Illegal terrority.

Excuse my stupidity, but what is card sharing?

When someone tells me that buying a Dreambox will give me all the sky channels, sports, movies etc for free, does that involve card sharing?

    That's exactly what it is..

And it cannot be discussed on here.

Gotcha, that's the answer I was after.

Then what exactly is the legal purpose of a Dreambox?

You can load snake, tetris clone and other games onto it and play them on your tv.

I never had a DVB-T box myself, but i suppose it might be powerful enough to decode the mpeg4 streams of saorview.

there is no discussing card sharing here.

They're enthusiast boxes, designed with customisable firmware for whatever purpose you choose. You could use them as Saorview/FTA sat combo boxes with 7 day EPG on both or use them for motorised dish systems. Doesn't have to be used for nefarious purposes, and can't be used that way out of the box.

Many dreamboxes have interchangeable tuners, so you could have a DVB-T for terrestrial, DVB-C for cable or DVB-S (2) for satellite.

In some European countries (Germany) cable customers are allowed to use their own set top box, so some people their use a dreambox to customise the setup.

This subsequently led to cable piracy by some. But that's another story.

Much like a car being capable of breaking the law and being used for unlawful purposes, dreamboxs have a lawful and legitimate purpose, but can be used for nefarious purposes.

I use mine to get Sky (with a legal card from Sky) and German FTA on the same box.

If you are just looking at Sky/ UK FTA then a Sky+ box would be easier.
