Going for a week mid August. Usually go Vilamoura but we'd like a change. I've heard that old town Albufeira is nice. Just going with two daughters and would like to be able to walk to restaurants at night but to avoid the strip area that I believe is quite 'lively'. Would anyone be able to recommend a hotel or good apt that does B&B , or suggest a particular area that they've found to be nice. I don't want to be more than an hour from the airport even though I've heard Lagos / Luz area is also good and I don't want to hire a car. Thanks..

There is a little road tourist train that goes around Albufeira if you stay near any of the stops but away from the strip you will be grand, Albufeira is lovely but it is your typical holiday destination. We went last year and stayed about a 10 min walk out side the old town in a hotel( cant think of the name ) We use to walk down to the old town in the evenings and get the road train back up.

We stayed in the Almar Apartments, a few years ago. They're on Rua Bartolomeu Dias, and are very convenient for the old town. They are a short walk from the top of the escalators. :)

Thanks. Sounds good. Unfortunately not available for my dates.

I stayed in Hotel Topazio early June and I loved it. 5 minutes from the strip but you don't really need to go there if you don't want to as you suggested. 15 minute walk to the old town but theres taxis, the shuttle bus and a bus down to it all the time.
