Minimised Volume Control Display

My challenge is that a minimised volume control display (showing 0% to 100%) appeared on my laptop screen three days ago (while I had my external speakers plugged in running iTunes) and I cannot remove it nor can I move it to see what is behind.
It persistently re-appears when I restart after both a warm shut down and a full/cold shut down. I no longer run iTunes and the external speakers are not connected (or even in the room !!)
How do I get rid of this display ?
    Thanks - in anticipation ...

    Fintan
