Opinions vary but my advise if you have never bought or sold shares is to walk into your local a.i.b. with your passport and 2 proof of address ,and order them over the counter ,will cost you less than 200euros and you will personally receive the certificates in your own name.(need to be purchasing over 2000euros min worth to make this a viable option)

Where did you get the tip?(boi)

    Good luck

Thanks for that. Can you buy through Computershare? I have BOI shares already so i just want to buy some more.

No tip, just the inevitable fall and rise markets. The economy is on the rise, property is on the rise and its sunny outside ;)

that seems like a very high cut

So your basically in the ****ter for 10% off the batt:rolleyes: ,trading/investing is tough enough without that kind of a start, saying that if the o/p is buying 10ks worth ,its getting more reasonable .

Yes you can purchase through Computershare, you will need ref. no which you will find on your share certificate. Charges are 1% plus €60 plus 1% stamp duty.

    Update.

You can no longer purchase shares in your local friendly aib any more. They except sale of shares, but no buys.

So the day where a man could do his business without setting permanent credit link is dead.

George Orwell fans may have been seen as conspiracy nuts, but its conspiracy fact now.

    {.......Within the blink of an eye we are turning into, a working mans inspection line ,where every penny we spend is recorded and profiled. And you can't say a word because everyone thinks it makes sense.As a child I wouldn't want pocket money if my parents knew where it was to go ,and now, past middle age, I can look at a bank statement and read exactly what I`ve been up too.Crazy prison we are now in ,my friends, the four courts(national archives) got burnt for less!! rant over....}

    Good luck

Crypto-currency provides the technology to make the current methods of purchasing stock obsolete. Overstock are the first company I know of to look into this, but I know the technology makes it possible already.

The technology would allow a model where companies could issue their stock with an IPO directly themselves, and people could buy it anonymously directly from them. The dividends could also be paid in crypto-currency directly to the address of the stock holders. Even more interestingly the stock holder could trade their shares directly with whoever they liked without any counter-party and with almost no fees.

There are already sites acting as unregulated crypto-currency stock exchanges such as https://www.havelockinvestments.com/ and https://cryptostocks.com/ but they act as counter-parties. Removing this counter-party risk by making the crypto-currency units themselves represent the shares is the next step, the only obstacles now are legal and political, which will be an interesting battle.

I bought through Computershare - worked out fine. They place the order, you send them a cheque and just waiting for the share certificate now

My husband bought BOI shares over phone with Computershare 1st week in July. Received documentation on 16th and posted cheque back drawn on my account as he does not have a cheque book on the 16th July. As cheque was not cashed he rang 24th July and was advised that certificate was issued on 23rd July and cheque would be cashed within a day or two.

He rang again a week later to say he did not receive share certificate and cheque still not cashed - was advised again, not to worry should get cert in a day or two as it was issued on 23rd July.

Rang last Tues as cheque still not cashed and no cert received and after a long wait was advised that they purchased the shares through a broker TD Direct Investment so they transferred him to them and was advised that the cheque was returned to him on 24th July as they could not accept a third party cheque. Needless to say we had not received the cheque back. He asked for complaints dept. and was given email address.

Surprise....Surprise the cheque arrived this morning. It was received by them on 18th July so took 20 days to come back to us and at this stage we do not know if the shares are in his name and if they are because they were not paid for within 10 days he may have to pay an administration fee.

I fail to understand why they could not accept payment from my account and the long delay in informing us as we could have arranged a bank draft if he had been told on 24th July. Now he has to ring again to find out if the shares are in his name and what type of payment they will accept as they would not accept a bank transfer initially.

What should have been a simple transaction has caused a huge amount of stress, time and costs.

I rang Computershare there and they received the cheque on the 31st July. It still has not been cashed as the settlement date is the 11th Aug. So after that date the cheque will be cashed and my cert sent to me. Heres hoping anyways

There is the potential that you may be getting front run on this transaction. For standard brokerage you are getting execution in a few seconds...

I've had several dealings with Computershare (Dublin and Bristol). One is as bad as the other, a bunch of tossers really, slow, unhelpful and painfully bureaucratic. It was only after I complained directly to the Investor Relations Manager from one of the stock companies concerned did I eventually get a satisfactory result.

A few years ago, they were much better, and purchased extra shares easily and without delay. Now it is an ordeal. :(

Sorry if I am repeating an old question but I just want ask what is the lowest amount one would need to justify investing in a very liquid US blue chip taking into account the fees of Irish brokers? Could it be done for 50 Euro?

Your question doesn't really make sense, for example you could purchase 1 share @ $X, let's say $ 20.00 but you could end up paying more in fees & charges? Is this a low amount? Do the charges justify the share purchase? Unlikely.

The best thing to do is talk to a broker/enquire with one of the online brokers.

Normally fee charges would be a small % of the value of shares purchased, but this will obviously vary from investor to investor.

Fair enough. What I was really trying to get at was the cost of execution only telephone brokers and other associated costs like the bid-ask spread. What would be the cheapest rate available for a small lump sum in US equity? It'd be good to keep expenses low, under 2% maybe.
