Excellent challenge. This should push people that little bit more.....

Never heard of it before so great to learn new methods.

I have a feeling that PS Elements wont be up to the challenge, articles discuss stitching 12 + photos, but with PSE memory limitations, i often struggle making a pano with 5 decent sized raw images.

If you choose to shoot JPEG, make sure you set the quality of your JPEG to the smallest setting. You’re not taking a single picture, but rather 20 or more and stitching them together so you don’t need to worry about quality on each of the shot as the final output will be a very high quality image. You could shoot at Large, but keep in mind that will exponentially increase processing time.

Looking forward to giving this a go :)

The ICE photo stitcher did a good job with about 30 large jpegs on not a very high speq machine, might be worth a try if anyone is having trouble

I tried this out with a beer bottle on the garden table, and both the bottle and the table came out all wobbly. I think it's important to try to keep the camera level when taking each picture (which I forgot because I just snapped 'em all nice and quick!) That's probably really obvious, but I guess I got distracted by the... newness of.. it.. yeah...

Yeah, you're supposed to keep the camera in the same position (or very, very close to the same position) when taking the images, I just kind of tilted it a bit in the different directions. You'll just have to get another beer! :)

Just doing a bit of messing around in the back garden..first attempt- not great I know

The software seems to want to create a very wide panorama rather than a 'standard' rectangular type shot - which I was trying to achieve.

Just wanted to say this is an utterly fantastic challenge, will really try to get something in for it, had never heard of the method before so excited to try it out.

Really like this challenge. First time I've heard of this technique and I love it.
So much trial and error but a wonderful learning experience.
There are a lot of photos stitched together in this. You need to shoot a lot more vertically than horizontally if you don't want a typical panoramic stitch.

    Hey guys,

What a great challenge you set dacogawa, I'm pretty new to photography (less than 6 months) and I've never heard of this method until I saw this thread last night. Fun to learn new techniques, couldn't resist giving it a go today.
Also only got Photoshop about 2 weeks ago so still trying to learn on the software side of things too.
Also, I don't exactly have the ideal equipment for this, I used a 35mm F/1.8.

Anyway, here's my attempt, Brendan Behan on the banks of the Royal Canal:

P.S. not sure about the 800pix max length rule, is it applicable in this thread?

I made the longest side 800pix, but you really can't see the level of detail in the statue that you can see at higher resolutions...

so much compression getting it down from 7956 to 800!!!

    :)

EDIT - I edited the post above to make the longest side 1200pix - please let me know if this is an issue. Thanks.

    A quiet moment.

    Photomerge of 20 images ( i think!)

Lots of learning while taking this:

-Double check you have the full set of images to make the collage (this could have been much wider but i missed one image in the middle on the far left so had to crop more than i wanted).

-shoot in portrait to help negate issues with photoshop creating a panorama.

-Use a tripod. Theres too much variation in the perspective of up close objects when stitching lots of photos together.

-If possible avoid loads of objects that are upclose, but trail into the distance (such as the pew's in this image) . why, see previous point.

I think we will go with 1200px on this challenge (unless a mod says otherwise) there is a lot of information/detail to be brought in & the whole essence of the pictures might suffer if 800 is the limit, but do remember that some devices don't view properly above 800 without scrolling (it might hamper the thanks). Brilliant pictures so far & so happy that loads of people like the challenge :D

i heard of this 'method' about four years ago, but was too lazy to try it out. so glad this was chosen for this week's challenge!

this pic is not exciting, but i don't have much time, and my dog won't sit still.. if i had more time, i would definitely think of a more exciting subject, than a pair of shoes. but then again, you all know how much i love shoes :p

    canon 5D mkii
    ef 85mm f/1.8 shot @ f/1.8
    33 pics stitched

Well done dgk and to everyone else who posted.

Very good challenge dacogawa, unfortunately I didn't get a chance to get involved.

Would it be an idea to open a thread on the main page just for this?
