Help please! Oil in Nissan Primera

    Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a pickle with the car. The wife is due any day now, so I need to be ready to go to hospital, and the aul' Nissan is giving me trouble.

    Nissan primera 1.6, petrol, non-auto.

Dislclaimer: I don't know much about cars...
The problem: I noticed a couple of days ago that the oil was a bit low, was going to leave it until the weekend as I don't know yet what kind of oil to put in it.

Tonight when driving it started making a weird noise, and the Check Engine (?) light started flashing intermittently. I could feel some unusual vibrations in the stick. Got home, checked the oil, and it was much lower than a few days ago. Is that enough the explain the noise, and the vibrations?

Also, I can't figure out what type of oil to put in the car?

    Can someone please advise?

    Thanks in advance!

Any motor factors will be able to tell you. Usually just give them the reg and they can get all parts from that. Failing that any Nissan garage will sort you out

Castrol have an oil selector on their site.
    http://oilselector.castrol.com/c/uk/eng/search
You don't give an age for your car but most modern stuff uses 5w30 oil.
I wouldn't leave it too long with low oil, it could mean the end of the engine.

Thanks for the advice guys. It turns out there's a garage not too far that i didnt know about. Walked over and they recommended the 10w40 type of oil, which seems to have done the trick.

I have no idea if there was any damage done, hopefully the 5 min of driving with the rattling noise werent enough to do any harm...

You better hope that rattle doesn't turn up as big end shells. Oil starvation is a common cause of these failing and it's a big job to change them

Yeah i know I've heard horror stories about whole engines having to be replaced after drying up completely. Car drove ok again tonight but should I have it checked it anyway next week? Any point?

Keep checking it every couple of days just to be sure. If your suspicious of oil leaks best thing to do is slide a piece of clean cardboard.under it after a drive and leave it over night. Start it up next morning and let it run for a couple of minutes before sliding the cardboard out. If there are dry stains it means they where made the night before and your leak in on the return side. Where as if there fresh it means they happened on start up

Nah I don't think there's a leak. The driveway is spotless. I will mention the incident the next time I bring the car for a checkup. I assume it's not urgent (?) as it's driving normally now. Thanks guys.
