    Hi

would anyone have an idea where |I could rent or borrow a "PCAN Bus to usb" lead/converter to upload one piece of software to a hobby project.

    http://www.peak-system.com/PCAN-USB.199.0.html?&L=1 or similar

    Thanks

does it have to be the PCAN interface, i've a couple of others that would probably work. PM me if you need any help...

Any recommendations for sniffing a can bus? At the minute I'm outputting to serial but would love some logging/address filtering

A Kvaser leaf is a great piece of kit, the last time i bought one it was about €300, which is actually good considering a Vector CAN interface would cost 10 times that. The kvaser comes with some pretty good software for sniffing CAN buses too.

for something a bit cheaper you could look at the CANUSB ones http://www.can232.com/canusb/products.htm I have one and they do work, just wouldn't be up to the quality of the Kvaser.
