They will each show the same number of games, but BT will get first pick of the games involving English teams, so this may mean that Sky will show more of the Irish teams.

The fixture list and who is showing what has not been announced yet.

This thread has all the info that has come to light so far: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057226255

That's my understanding of it. I remember thinking that if I stuck with Sky and didn't get BT, I would likely miss out on one away match in England. As it happens, Leinster have two English teams in their pool, so I'll probably miss out on two matches.

Can anyone remember what happens about TV coverage at the knock-out stages?

Two quarters each, one semi each and both show the final. No idea on how they decide which games they'll show, but I'd assume it's the same as the group in that BT get first choice on English teams.

I can't see many people signing up to both to see all the matches, or adding one to the other. A competition with enormous demand like the Premier League might be able to sustain two different subscription services, I'm not so sure about a rugby tournament.

I think your're right about this. I had both for a few months last season, as I got a special offer from Setanta/BT - I really enjoyed it, but there is no way I would pay the full whack, especially now that Sky have the Top 14 and Rabo/Guinness...or whatever it is.

actually who has what rights to each of the competitions next season?

Top14 - Sky, Canal+ (although BeIn are involved in legal action against Canal+), playoff matches sometimes on TV5 Monde

    Pro12 - Sky, TG4, don't know about the rest

    Aviva - BT Sport

I'm sticking with Sky Sports and TG4 for the scraps. Another €20/month to watch Austin Healey talk b0ll0x is a step too far, sorry BOD.

I'd always go to the pub for big away games anyway so I might miss one out of six pool games roughly

Just got BT Sport in a few weeks ago. There has been nothing on it yet, but I'm getting it free with BT Broadband (UK). Looking forward to watching some sport on it in a few weeks time. I'm a big football fan too so it's worth it for me especially with the CL being on BT in the UK from 2015.

If Sky hadn't bought the rights to the Pro12, I'd have gone with BT; €16 per month (on UPC) vs €37 pm for Sky Sports, but if Sky take the plum games from the Pro12 and have more of the Irish games in the European Cup, then I'll probably end up going with them.

Actually, has there been any mention of a weekly highlights show of the European cup?

Apparently BBC Wales and S4C have signed up for Wales, S4C's games will now be on Sundays.

Why can't Ireland, like France, decide on their own TV package? So we could sell the rights to either Sky or BT. People might answer how we're linked so tightly with England in terms of TV but it's been shown with the November internationals that location blocking can solve that problem.

Maybe there's an answer, I'm genuinely asking.

They are not our rights to sell, they are the EPCR's rights. Why would they bother selling just the rights for the Irish provinces' games to RTE or whoever when they could do a single deal for everyone? No, this is completely unworkable I'm afraid.

Also just signed up to BT Broadband but no TV package.

So I get the BT Sport App with that, plus I continue to flog my parent's Sky Go account and should therefore be pretty covered without having to sacrifice any time to letting her watch the E! Channel which she so desperately wanted.

    Win Win Win.

Since it's inception Sky has always bought rights on a UK & Ireland basis, it's how it operates, it has heretofore not bought rights for one jurisdiction without buying at the very least non-exclusive rights in the other. So witness the UEFA Champions League where it has exclusive UK rights for its games (except the final which it shares with ITV) and non exclusive rights in Ireland.

Its been complicated by the fact there seems to be a deal within the deal in that English clubs will mostly be on BT and the rest on Sky. In the past I think ERC would have sold the rights on a country basis, but I think the UK was taken as one, hence there was a time when games were live on RTE in the Republic but only available on Sky in the North. There were UK rights, Irish rights, French rights etc. The English clubs seem to have broken that now though.

It's a total nuisance this to be honest. Now if you want your full sporting fix you need to subscribe to Sky and BT Sport.

Just making it more expensive for customers.

Agree completely. They say (whoever "they" are!) that competition is good.....not in this instance.

We'll see how it plays out.

BT is 16 euro per month (and millions of UK houses get it free). Sky Sports is 36 euro per month; the quality of content on Sky is better but not by that much. One of these services is charging too little or too much - hopefully it's the latter and Sky will start to compete on price.

I don't think Sky have ever dropped prices. Unfortunately I think they have the financial clout to be able to keep the price at that level.

Is there a Sky Sports channel that they mainly show the rugby on or could it be anyone of them?

It was mainly SS1 or SS2 for the HEC, but I've seen super 15 on SS3.

Sky like to spread stuff about to justify you having all their channels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,540 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

i'm currently €10 a month for BT till october. Rang after football finished to cancel (get cheaper deal) . The lad on the phone said to ring in October again to see what deals they have. I'd expect to pay €10 again at that stage. I also have sky sports, and i usually on anywhere between 25-50% off on that by ringing and claiming poverty etc.

If I was on the full price for both I could not justify the costs as I pay the bills by myself, but with a few phone calls every few months you can keep the costs down and watch all the rugby from the comfort of your own couch !

  • Administrators Posts: 54,424 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Not sure the ring up and threaten to cancel tactic works for those of us who'd have to get Sky and BT through UPC.

Are UPC allowed to discount those packages?

That is starting to change now. All golf is on SS4, European football on SS5, premier league has always been on 1 & 2.

Since you can only subscribe to the package anyway it makes no odds to the customer.

The elephant in the room with Sky is that you cannot just subscribe to the Sports channels. You must have the basic package (28 euro a month) and then and only then add the Sports package. (36 euro a month)
I know you can get deals etc. but that is an awful amount of cash just to watch Rugby. If that's the only reason you want Sky.

Last season I subscribed for a month to the Sports package which got me the 4 quarters and the 2 semis. Very different this coming season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,077 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

I just read on another thread that the Setanta/BT package is going up to €21.99 per month, starting next month. That's a definite 'no' for me. :(

On some platforms Sky Sports 1&2 only are available. Sky are required to make them available wholesale. They have a tacit agreement with Ofcom not to show Premier League football (the biggest driving force for Sky Sports subscriptions) regularly on other channels in return for which Ofcom will not add Sky Sports 3,4,and 5 to Wholesale Must Offer.

Evision is I think the only platform in this jurisdiction affected by that though.
