Got some interest from my ford mondeo outside of Europe, looked around the web, so far can't find forms that needed feeling besides informing the motor tax office the car will be exported outside of the country.

Anyone have experience shipping out of Europe?

Just curious what sort of scams do they try to pull off.

At a guess, this is a ship's engineer who can't get there himself who will send his agent to collect plus a bank draft

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 Dusty Philosopher

He agreed to a bank transfer so I gave him my Iban and Bic number, once he sends the money into my bank, he'll be using a shipping company to pick up the car.

Think of it this way.....Is it a special Mondeo ? There are millions of them worldwide, why would he go to this trouble for yours?

99.999999% chance of a scam. Be very careful.

What happens is they transfer the money to your accout, plus an extra €1000, say, and then they ask you to give them the €1,000 in cash, plus your car.

A bloke arrives to take your car and your money.

Great, isn't it? You have the money, and they have the car.

    But.....

They then tell their bank that the original transfer (the full amount with the extra€1,000) was fraudulent and the bank takes the money back from your account (yes they CAN do that).

So now you have no car, no money and are €1,000 down as well!

Walk away. It's not worth it.

You need to contact your bank now and tell them what you've done. Now meaning now. As in pick up the phone and stop posting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

Contact the guy and say you have bank trouble and would he send the money by Western Union, which is non-reversible, and see if you ever hear from him again.

Had a talk with my bank, bank transfer is 100% safe, plus Iban and Bic number don't give out your details, they're needed in all international incoming and outgoings.

I'll be very interested to see the outcome of this, it's a pretty well known and well documented scam, been going on for a few years now.........

I hope you can afford the loss - because what IF we're right?

Is this worth the risk? - are you willing to gamble that much money?

    Just checked my mail.

    Hi ,
I received your message and I of course would you bank transfer before this week but I would like us

formalisions pre-selling the vehicle to assert the right of the seller and the buyer.

So you find ATTACHED promise to sell that guarantee me that I'm the only person

to whom you sell your car know that the sale agreement is different from the contract of sale

the sale agreement as the name suggests is a paper that allows two individuals to make a deal

and promise to purchase a vehicle such as you promise to sell me your car

and that I am the sole buyer.

Although pleasant thing to you and your family

    *: stripe the useless mention

*: Installment: Only a legal decision can cancel the sale, Down payment: If the purchaser desists, its down payments are lost, if the salesman desists, it must refund an amount equal to the double of the down payments *** Signature preceded by the mention “read and approved”.

What makes no sense is what someone would want to buy second hand cars from Ireland when they're more expensive here.

Of you're looking for secondhand right-hand-drive cars you'd probably be better going to the UK or better still Japan where you'd have much more choice of cars due to the population and where resale values are much lower than Ireland.

I'd suspect a scam or money laundering.

I am a prince and I need a foreign bank account to hide my Naira in because of tax reasons, would it be possible for you to contact me and give me your bank details please?:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 Dusty Philosopher

I was laughing so hard when I read that last message, to be fair, I though the guy was from france, his name suggested it until last night when he mentioned his address, anyways have another buyer lined up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭wildefalcon

Money Laundering - you are right, it does leave the seller exposed to charges of money laundering, using you account to launder funds.

Western Union, that's a good plan, tell them your account is closed for a bank holiday or something.

Bic and Iban don;t give out your details, its like your paypal account, they're a way of sending and receiving money internationally.

They aren't payment companies, BIC is the Bank identifier code and IBAN is the international bank account number.
Your bank account number is part of the IBAN number
The BIC is an international version of the Sort Code.
    OSI beat me to it.^^
Its no laughing matter though, even if they don't steal money they can lock your account up when the sh1t hits the fan.

    Yup.

    They're your bank account number.

It's questionable what use they'd be to anyone though in reality. Withdrawing money from an account isn't really possible. They could just use it for identity theft or establishing direct debits though.

I've never understood why banks can't just give customers a paying in number. Maybe even use your mobile number or something like that.

You shouldn't have to reveal account numbers to receive payments.

This scam seems to be a slight variation on the ones mentioned above. He has your bank details already which alone is not much use to him. However, he's trying to get your signature now with this document.

Presumably they have the cars registration number though?
Don't underestimate what can and can't be traced from seemingly scanty information.

The car is registered under my dads name, but not the bank details.

I remember Jeremy Clarkson once made the assersion that nobody could do anything with your account details; and proceeded to publish his own account details in a magazine article. His account was charged something like £500 as somebody had used his details to set up a direct debit to a charity organisation.

Lol, no money on the card, I only use it to make online payments and direct debit for my gym, he can't setup a direct debt without a name.

    Never mind that.

He needs to contact his internet service provider and get them to cancel his internets as he shouldn't be allowed operate a computer.

He has to be trolling. Nobody could be that dumb...

    Jeez I hope so.
OP in case it hasn't been clear enough it IS a SCAM.
They pull this kind of crap all the time hoping that they will find some poor sod who would believe it.
Google these types of scams and you'll be reading stories for the rest of your life.
It isn't always an African country though, when I was selling my Avensis ('98 car) I got a call from Cyprus.
I was offering the car for something like 1.5k on Carzone.
Same day guy calls in quite bad english saying he loves it blah blah and wants it for his daughter.
Said he'd pay me extra for me to stop the sale of the car and a bit extra for my inconvenience.
I played along as I knew this was a joke and told him that I could drive the car to his house as well for a nominal fee.
Guy hung up and that was that.
    Sell it to someone else.

Very easy to set up Direct Debits with just the account details. There's no verification process in place at all beyond the banks trust that the retailer will verify the persons ID.

And if you have someones full name, address and account details which the OPs 'buyer' likely does at this point, it wouldn't be too difficult to gain access via telephone banking or similar.

People have been paying for stuff with cheques for decades. The same details have been printed on them the whole time and no one had any problem handing them to strangers.

Even if companies are being lax and letting people set up Direct Debits without checking properly its not like someone using a cloned card to take out money without being able to be traced like an atm

If they could just take money they wouldn't bother with the rest of the ruse and only make a grand. They'd just clean the account out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,069 ✭✭✭✭CiniO

While purchasing of car that way is surely a scam, but I'm with the OP in relation to releiving bank account numbers.
It's absolutely normal way of accepting payment, and thousands or millions individuals and traders do it all over the world to accept payments.
