Stuck, blocked, and feeling I am staring at at wall all the time

I have a career in architecture which was decimated by the recession and haven't had a paid job in three years. In this time I retrained as an English teacher, did a small amount of career related work, and upskilled by learning some new 3D modelling software. I know it's not a personal failure but more of a failure of the whole system but still I beat myself up and find myself getting depressed which is in turn leading to lack of motivation, a vicious circle scenario.
I applied for jobs abroad but because I am in my early 50s there was no traction.
I did think to just leave and teach English somewhere but find it hard to walk away from all the sunk costs involved in my career development. I am at a loss.
Is it just a case of sitting it out and waiting for the economy to start up again?

Sorry to hear. Do you have a family? Would you consider something like teaching in Saudi Arabia to make some money and then come back to start again? Or even try get architecture work in one of those countries?
Being at a dead end is not a nice feeling.

I'm single, no kids and am dealing with a blind parent who now has a cancer diagnosis. It's not something I can walk away from so easily.

have you worked as an English teacher? is there any opportunity to pursue this?
can understand why you don't want to move abroad, but looking after a parent is a decent thing to do.

would you consider college again or do you feel you're done with that?
    Take care

Tough situation OP. Have family in same profession and it hasnt been an easy few years at all. I hope things will pick up soon (and Irish people will use architects more)
