I'm looking into getting a gaming PC in the next month and I've been snooping around adverts and donedeal for some second hand stuff.

What's everyone's opinion on buying second hand?

Is there particular components I should stay away from? Should I be looking for receipts?

I buy loads of my stuff through adverts. There are some real eejits, who think 'doing business' means being an arrogant prick. There are also some awesome people who make buying second hand a joy and bargain.

Basically use you gut. If your gut tells you the person is an eejit, avoid. Many people go out of their way to be nice.

Bought this guys QNIX monitor off him last night, pleasure to deal with. PC and room it was in where immaculate. I've never seen such a clean keyboard lol.

Personally I don't think you can go far wrong with that spec for that price.

BTW I'm bobsbits on there just in case you want to see my feedback. I've nothing for sale atm, my catleap is sold.

I wouldn't buy second hand personally, for a few extra shillings you get the piece of mind knowing the product is new and safe!

In all honesty I don't subscribe to that line of thinking personally. The reason being the hassle I've had, and seen other people have with most of the component suppliers.

If a PC component works, it works. I suppose it's helped by the fact I know what I'm looking for but if you avoid anything with moving parts (pumps, mechanical HDDs) you should be grand if it will run through 15 mins of prime95 (CPU) or a round of 3DMark (GPU). The rest is visual inspection: Does it look like it's been put together by a gorilla with a hammer? Are the cables managed properly? Is it full of dust?

That said many subscribe to IP's point of view. Personally though euro for euro buying something prebuilt of adverts (if you know what you're looking for) vs Curry's I'll go with adverts every-time. That said if you're doing a self build then the returns aren't as good unless you get a bargain.
