Travelling to Thurles from Limerick for the first time

This Sunday I plan on going to the hurling quarter finals in Thurles. I'll be travelling from Limerick City with 2 others. I've never been to Thurles before so I need a bit of help.

Can tickets for the stand still be bought? If so what would you recommend?

What's the best way to travel? Should I take the train or would it be better driving over? Would the traffic/parking be bad before and after the match?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Apparently stand tickets are sold out. Terrace available online... bit of controversy atm, with high demand for tickets.

You can drive, but I'd get in early... and yes, the traffic will be bad before and after in the immediate vicinity of Thurles. We generally go by the Newport road rather than the motorway, the motorway was absolutely chaotic in 2011 when we played Dublin.

The train is a lot handier tbqh, you arrive in at a nice time, you can walk to the station in no time and leave. I suppose it's that bit more expensive, and demand will probably be high for train tickets, but particularly if you're living in the city, it's a lot more convenient imo.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to get terrace tickets then. Are there special trains on for the match or just the regular ones?

I haven't actually checked, but they usually put on a couple extra if the demand is high.

The terrace generally has a great atmosphere in fairness, even if the view isn't as good, it's where I'll be.

yeah it's just a bit much standing for two matches. what terrace would the limerick and tipp supporters be on?

Limerick are usually in the town end, Tipp in the opposite (Killinan End), not 100% sure how it will be divided for this one.

If they'd sense they'd give limerick and Dublin the one terrace and Tipp and Wexford the other but it won't really work that way as both are on general sale so there will be a fair mixture.

Just read on the Wexford website that ticket demand far outweighs supply for the stand. Is there any chance this game will sell out or will tickets definitely be available on the day?

In the Limerick thread, someone said that Limerick are being given the Killinan End... would be unusual.

And I'd buy my tickets in advance... there seems to be a big demand, and while I'm not sure if it'd sell out, I'd definitely buy tickets now if you want to go.

Could this thread perhaps be merged with this one mod?

Away team are usually in the Town end. This time it's Wexford/Dublin in the Town End. Although there will be a decent mix in both terraces.

Wexford seem to have a lot of demand for tickets with the momentum they have built up and Limerick tend to always travel well enough.

Firstly, your gonna have a great day out in Thurles on Sunday. Can't bait it for a championship match!

Tickets: At present all general sale stand tickets are sold out, terrace tickets are available and if you don't mind standing be easy to get one. This game will be not be a sell out like people are saying, no way. 53,500 is a massive attendance and don't mind what Wexford are saying either, pure BS.

Travelling to Thurles is one of the easiest with the train station only a small walk away from the square and the stadium. Get a train I say from Limerick. If your driving then the Newport road would be a good option, you'd come in at the racecourse and join up with the Nenagh road, avoid a nice bit of traffic. Park then anywhere on the road there and a 10-15 minute walk into town is all.

Likewise, coming to Thurles via Tipperary Town will bring you in from the Holycross side and plenty of car parks on that road within a 10 minute walk to the stadium. Durlas Og GAA club have a carpark on the Holycross road just behind Lidl and they are only a stones throw from the stadium.

Traffic after games in Thurles is more often than not always busy and if your not in a rush then it ain't a problem, again all depends on where you park. But to avoid all this get the train, couldn't be any easier!

Bought 3 tickets for the Killinan End Terrace. I think we're going to drive. Any idea what time we'd have to leave Limerick City at to avoid traffic jams and getting in hour an hour before throw in?

Is the capacity really 53,000? I know a lot of other grounds have capacitys bigger then what H&S actually let in.

I'd say between Wexford/Limerick/Tipp they'll bring 45k between them so with Dubs and neutrals I could see it going over 50k. Do the Dubs usually travel well for the hurlers?

You'd wanna be on the road at 10. Get into Thurles and parked up in a nice spot facing for home. Walk down the town and get a bit to eat and a drink. Give yourself 2 hours before throw in then. No point leaving Limerick before 12 and rushing, you'd be up early anyway as you will be buzzing to get going.

Ya, 53k will fit. The terraces hold more than you'd think.

Dublin will get lost on their way to Thurles, they don't travel well, haha! They should bring good support. 45k max I say in town on Sunday!

Lads the newport road is closed due to flooding. Would the best alternative route just be to take the motorway?

Motorway or else come by Tipp Town and into Thurles via Holycross. Plenty of car parks within 5 minutes walk then of the Stadium on the Holycross road.
