samsung galaxey 5 problem

    I have spent the last two day trying to put all my stuff from new ish phone to laptop. I first (as instructed) downloaded Kies
    that was not a problem. but it tells me to connect to laptop via cable.. I did that with the usb from charger and connected to phone. the phone bleeps whenever I connect it but no trace of my photos or contacts or anything. when I first did it seemed to work but it stopped downloading and says 35 (i am sure there should be much more) photos cannot be downloaded.
    when I got to troubleshooter it gives instructions for windows xp or windows 7 but I am running windows 8 dammit.
    any advice

    Try AirDroid - it works via wireless. I use it instead of Kies.
