What happened to the racing "culture/worship" from the 00's? (aka soup your Civic)

I remember it disappeared overnight in 2008/2009.
Even the fast and furious franchise seemed to stop being about street racing and more about robberies/heists.

This 1uping over another fella with a car, was the one constant element throughout my teenage years.

    Its coming back!

There has been a marked rise in scrote-mobiles around my area.

The 2-year Oz visas are lapsing it seems.

For the same reason that Towns across the country are a lot quieter after closing time with less carry on and vandalism and cities across Australia are seeing the opposite.

Jeez I'd love a game of NFSU2, I'm not even a car nut but i would spend hours tweaking the colours and getting the right neon light underneath just right.

The series went to crap after that

Still a few of them knocking around my area in their souped up granny cars.

There was more during the Celtic Tiger because they were all getting paid too much for putting one brick on top of another and living at home with mammy so they had plenty of disposable cash to spend on neons and plastic tat for their '97 Civic.

Well, like the dumbass racing fad that it was, it came screaming around the corner doing 80 in a 40 and drifted into an oncoming car, killing everyone involved.

Suddenly nobody was interested in street racing in Ireland. Least of all when half the roads are the same layout as they were before automobiles were a thing and the fastest thing in your life was a man on a horse.

That and the economy tanked, suddenly spending half a weeks wages on some stupid exhaust tip for your ma's Corolla wasn't as important as paying rent.

Depends what you mean by racing culture.

If you talking about 1.4 Honda civics that drive around circles in towns with load fart cannons, they are still around, it's just they are using audi. A4 TDi with rs4 body kits and diesel turbo dump valve sound.
Those who were in to actual performance cars just had to leave them behind due to families or other priorities or just still drive nice performance cars like they used too.

They realised people pitied them in their 15 year old 1.2 litre cars.

Still see doughnuts on every junction in the country.
I blame Clarkson for this,he's always smoking the tyres.

Ould hat. Tat. Hiffle and piffle and old plum-pud. The Next Big Thing (TM) is an orange Hillman Hunter with fluffy-dice on the mirror and plenty Isopon.

    The recession happened.

You will also notice there is a lot less people wearing 60euro soccer jerseys, with 100euro tracksuits, and 150euro runners these days, compared to 8-9 years ago. People don't have the money.

    ...diesel turbo dump valve sound...

Wastegate. Fake wastegate "Booo", lad. Diesels don't use dumpvalves! :)
