No Claims Bonus Query

    I have a query about NCB's.

    I have been getting quotes for renewing my wife's motor policy.

    The certificate of no claims bonus which her current insurer has issued states;

    .....has been insured under policy ref XXXXXX since 25/07/2013, and at renewal date is entitled to a No Claims Discount of 50%.

    The actual number of claims-free years under this policy is 1.

    This is because she has only been with this company for one year, however she has been insured and claim free with various other companies for 8 or 9 years (usually no longer than one or two years with each).

    Some companies are now giving credit for having up to 10 years claim free driving but I don't understand how you are meant to avail of this if each company will only certify you for the period you were with them and the company which is now quoting is saying they will only accept what ever NCB the last company has put on the most recent certificate (in this case 5 years as it says 50%).

    Percentages vary between companies.
    Normally they put "years on inception" on the NCB cert aswell.

    With the advent of protected NCBs the company can only tell the truth. She has been with them for 1 year and not made a claim and she has full NCB. They don't know what her, or my when my renewal comes, claims history is before she got the policy.

    In order to avail of the higher NCBs then you have to stick with the same company, but they don't give competitive quotes for renewals, so it may end up costing more to get a higher NCB than moving.

    I'm a bit confused by this aswell, I have 5 years no claims at the moment, I was away so wasn't driving the car now I'm starting with a new company so I have 5 years NCB with 1 company and will hopefully have another 1 year next July, so what would happen if I change company again July 2015, the new company will ask for proof of no claims bonus of 6 years but I can only show 1 year??
    Is this not causing mayhem in the insurance market? I have to post evidence of my 5 year NCB to the new company this week but should I be sending them a photocopy?,why should I give them the original if it does not benefit me at all?

    Edit: sorry for thread hijacking
