Using iPhone as a sat nav

I'm heading to the UK next week and was wondering if I would be charged for using my iPhone as a satnav? I don't want to buy a satnav if I don't have to. But I don't want to get hammered for data charges either

    Thanks

Google Maps satnav is fantastic but will use data.

Have used NavFree before with mixed results. Mind you, that was in Italy and Google maps also had issues keeping up with where the roads were supposed to be.

If your phone is unlocked if recommend getting a prepay Three Sim and using it for google maps in the iPhone. Free data with no limit and the system works brilliant over there. Particularly turn by turn voice.

Alternatively if you're on 3 you'll get free data over there.

Unfortunately I'm on contract with O2, with a lousy service on calls and data.

Just downloaded that app referenced above and it doesn't show the street where I'll be staying in London, even though it's in google maps. Dubious about using it now.

Still don't want to buy a satnav as I'll have no use for it otherwise but it might be a safer bet.

Do a google search within the app it will find it then store search

The TomTom app won't use data but it's €40 and a fairly hefty download if you don't have much space on your phone. Still cheaper than a dedicated GPS.

Can't you download offline maps in the Google Maps app before you go and it will work that way?

I drove around the UK last year with this - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/gps-navigation-sat-nav-by/id329340711

I also used it to drive to Germany earlier this year, and it performed faultlessly off-line in both cases.

App costs €0.69, and €10.99 gets you all maps available around the world...
