Roscoff - La Rochelle

    Hi all

    Family holiday in France.

We're driving in a camper from Roscoff to Chatelaillon-Plage near La Rochelle.

I want to get there asap, but also have two young children so we're breaking the journey up into two days driving.

Looking for somewhere to stop that is nice just off the main route down - either via Rennes or Vannes.

    Any ideas?

Trying to minimise driving to keep the small ones happy!

You could be there in 6 hours depending on traffic/road works, why not pit stop for lunch and aim to get there in 1 day?

But if I had to choose between the two I'd go to Vannes, it's beside the sea and they've a pretty cool aquarium there, there's not a whole lot to do in Rennes to be honest, apart from exhibitions and just taking in the town, which is nice. For kids you do have Le Parc de Guyelles, it's a small park with animals, you also have the very nice Parc du Thabor. For the parents you have an Irish pub on the main square. The city is nice but bear in mind it's primarily a student town.

With the kids Vannes is the better bet imho, it's closer to all the holiday destinations and there's probably more family orientated activities, it's small and quaint and the cool sea breeze is a bonus at this time of year.

    Bon Voyage!

    Thanks for the reply.

Just to clarify - I'm looking for somewhere to stay anywhere on the route down. Probably not big towns like Rennes or Vannes.

Smaller towns or villages, nice places for camping.

Thinking someplace like Nozay - Loire Atlantique. Or Clissons.

Doing the drive in one day would be dependent on how the kids are handling it.

Ahh okay, I can't really give you any advice about places around Rennes because I only ever stay in the city.

Around Vannes I know well, check this area out it's very nice and it's on the Golf du Morbihan.

Just a note on the Golf, there can be lethal currents in some areas, something to bear in mind if you go swimming there. There are nice spots littered all around that area, especially if you go further towards Sarzeau and the Presquille de Rhuys but that's quite a detour. Enjoy.

I really think with a little entertainment at all this is doable with say two 1 hour stops at decent stops where ye can get out and run about, some stops have small playgrounds.. That way you'll be driving no more than 2 hours in a go..
We've been doing that sort of journeyand further in France for 11 years and never bothered with stopping over.. Magazines, CD's, sing alongs, it all breaks the journey !!
We just this year for Xmass gone by bought the kids DVD screens for the back. they were limited to one movie each for each leg down & back.
