thanks for that, had it put on a diagnostics machine, over half a dozen other undetected issues not picked up at the nct cropped up,the mechanic gave the engine a good rev and low and behold she has started burning oil,new engine needed

New engine sounds a bit extreme. The 1.3 12v accents are fond of oil, its generally the valve stem oil seals. I doubt thats the reason for your NCT failure one way or the other. Your lambda is way out, hows the car running? Is the exhaust leaking?

was drinking petrol, those readings came up after I put in a full bottle of dipetane and gave it a 20 mile Italian tune up just before the test, either way the car wasn't worth it even if its valve stem seals, its a 2000 with 113k on the clock,it needed a set of back shocks and the timing belt/water pump would be needed soon anyway, all in all it would have been a money pit,the car was thirsty for a 1.3,drank 20 euro petrol in 50 miles,i asked the NCT inspector and he said it doesn't appear to be leaking.
