    Settle a Pub argument here

Can/Do speed vans work at night

Do they only detect speed as it approaches on its side of the road/far side of the road

Or the moment it actually passes the van.

Must be a lively pub you're in.

    1. Only if the operator inside the van shines a torch out the window.

    2. Both sides

People there think Radar/lasers don't work at night ?

No no no no no. They only work at night if you have your own lights on, and only when your driving towards the front of the van.

At night you may notice a flash as it photographs a speeding vehicle.

Step 1, note down speed vans registration details.

Step 2, go to motor factors, get plates made up with speed vans details.

Step 3, fit new registration plates with speed vans details to your own vehicle.

Step 4, drive as fast as your car will fcuking go past speeding van at least 30 times in each direction.

Step5, lol as speed van repeatedly snaps pics of its own reg doing 160kmh in 50 zone and auto issues tickets to registered owner (itself)

    Trolling speed vans. Doable?

It can work at night. Your man inside listens as you pass the van and depending on the noise he decides if you were going too fast. He then leans out and takes a picture with his phone.

    Actually, it's sonar, not radar.

I've never seen them at night. I actually got overtaken by a speed van in a 50kph zone. The fecker was flying it.

Nope they use radar here in the vans as far as I'm aware. And was just making a point did not realise you had to be 100% accurate on what exactly the system was being used. Thought listing some detection methods was enough my bad :pac:

It doesn't really matter a whole pile, but I think they use sonar :D

They emit a pulse which hits the car and the time it takes to bounce back to the camera is measured and the speed is calculated. This is also how boats tell the depth of water below them.

Sonar and radar are fairly similar anyway :)

That has been very informative,so there is a camera and sonar facing both back and front ?
So hitting the brakes as soon as you see them is already too late?

I got over taken by an Ice cream van once playing his jingle ,now that's embarrassing.

According to Einsteins Theory of Relativity, velocity (speed) and time are intrinsically linked.

The faster you are going past the speed van the slower time will pass for you while time for the observer in the van will pass normally for him. So the closer to the speed of light when you pass the van the slower time will go for you.

Time will have passed so quickly for the van operator that he will have taken your picture, sent you a fine in the post, you will fail to have paid it, been found guilty (in absence) in court, seventy years will have passed (although it will have been mere seconds for you) you'll have gotten home found the courts judgement, decide to appeal the fine and because the judge and van operator are now dead you will win the appeal, happy days.

So moral of the story is, travel everywhere at as close to the speed of light as is possible. Only snag with this is, you will end up with €000's in library fines for overdue books.

Broken fridge perhaps? He had to hurry and sell the ice creams before they melted. :D
