Golf GTI MkV oil issue

Hi folks, wonder if anyone could shed any light on this for me. Had the golf serviced 2 months ago, checked the oil the other night and it was down to quarter between the min/max. I know they are meant to burn a bit of oil but wasn't expecting that much anyway, went back to main dealer, (to match the oil) picked it up, put in 1/2 a litre to bring it up to 3/4.

A few days later I started the car and the 'oil pressure, turn engine off immediately' warning came on. I turned it off straight away. Checked the oil again and it's still 3/4 full. I re-started the car and drove the 2km home with no issues, anyone have anything similar, or ideas on what it could be, I took it back to dealer and they had a quick look, not throwing up any faults but haven't been driving it since out of fear of engine damage.

I've had a few people give their opinion on a different forum, but can anyone suggest anyone who knows these cars well around Dublin that I could get it to?

Others were suggesting the oil pick up in the sump might be clogged, causing the low oil pressure. I think the oil consumption may be normal, how's yours?

You need a new pickup and gauze fitted immediately. Don't mess around or it'll cost you dearly-there is history with the 2.0 tfsi in this regard.

A VW garage or George Dalton will do it.

How regularly have you changed the oil and what oil have you been using?

I only have the car 2 and a half months. It has a regular full service history.

I had the timing belt and fluids done as soon as I got it in Fosters a couple of months ago. I'll have to check the oil later, car is parked a good bit away, I think halvoline 5w40 off hand. It was the same oil Fosters used during the fluids change they did.

I left it in to a mechanic I know in Fosters and had said there's no faults showing and that he'd try to do a compression test this week, I had to tell them about the pick up so didn't fill me with confidence.

It could also be a dodgy oil pressure sensor, but I would doubt it. Get the sump dropped, cleaned and the pickup replaced. Fill the car with a high quality fully synthetic oil and use the same for top ups and oil changes in future. It costs more than crap oil, but is really really worth it.

A lot of these engines drink a fair bit of oil, so don't worry about that too much.

Thanks for that Roger, if I can't find anyone else who knows the common stuff inside out i'll drop it back to Fosters and ask them to do that. I had assumed they'd use a good oil, I even went back to them to match it for top-ups. I'll have a google for recommended oils.

I haven't driven it since, bar the 2km trip to Fosters (and tentatively), should I even be driving it back up there?

Yup did that Pat, that's where the halvoline stuff came from, but i'll look into other options.

I would say it's a lottery...depends if the pickup is so badly blocked that it starves the engine. I would probably tow it behind a mates car, but I'm no mechanic. If you call Daltons tomorrow they'll give you sound advice - they are highly regarded VAG mechanics and I would take their advice. In fact I'd ask them to do the work!

You left it in for an oil pressure problem and he's going to do a compression test?

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's what he said, in his defence maybe it was an oil pressure test, if that's a possibility?

I'm sure he meant an oil pressure test.

Unfortunately doing an oil pressure test on a MkV GTI is extremely awkward due to the location of the pressure sensor.

It is actually quicker to drop the sump for a look at the pickup.
