Hi all i have just purchased a 2nd hand Onkyo tx-ds787 receiver for music and hopefully surround sound.
I have connected the optical out from my pc to the optical in on the receiver but i cant get any sound from the speakers.
I have all drivers up to date and sound output set to optical out on my pc so i do not think it is my computer.

Here is a pic of the back of the receiver, i have my speakers connected to the banana plugs, i wonder do i have to connect them to the connections below the optical?

I also must mention i have old surround speakers that are bare wire not the rca type.

Any and all help appreciated, thank you

If your using a windows PC you need to enable your optical out.
Usually something similar to : control panel, sound, playback device and chose digital out making it the "default" playback device and turn up the sound.
The Onkyo may have the optical assigned to another port, find which input it's been allocated to in the menu as well setting or reseting it by default.
Yes the ports to the right of the fan are for the passive speaker, the holo center is where some one has used banana plugs. Rca speakers do not connect those sockets.

dont see an optical on my windows pc,but i had a digital out to digital in on a sound bar that worked, onkyo would be more used with 5-1 with surround sound ,will your speakers handle it?

I finally sorted it, i had the optical out enabled but i had to change the bit rate of the sound, to a lower setting i.e 24bit 192k or whatever it was and it worked then.

As regards surround sound, i did some more homework on the mobo's sound chip, it does not support surround sound.

I can pick up a cheapish one online and that should solve my problems.

    Thanks for the help
