Can anybody clarify something for me. I was playing with a guy today who was using his i phone on his trolly with some sort of golf gps app. I told him I thought they were illegal but he told me otherwise because it was only measuring distance. I'd just like to know and it has probably been discussed here before. Thanks

Illegal because it has the capability of measuring/telling wind speed direction. There are also undoubtedly apps out there that could potentially tell him the slope

If DMD's are allowed in comps then iPhones "may" be allowed.
The latest statement from the R&A is very unclear. I think Snow Drifts has a link to something that shows they are now ok

iPhone app can be used as long as it does not have other functions for wind, slope etc.

However the club must have a local rule permitting it.

So sounds like yours did not allow it.

The wording is still a little unclear and I think still needs a little better clarification, our club did not add smartphones to the local rule so in our comps they are still banned.

Yeah the whole issue was dealt with very poorly and only added to confusion.

Here is the new flow chart which seems to render the iphone legal for use. (if there is local rule permitting the use of a DMD...)

Still think you could argue either way based on that for chart.

Yep I agree, that is why as a committee we decided not to amend the local rule.
