Clothes smell slightly stale after washing

Been having a problem with the washing machine for the last few weeks. Basically, after washing the clothes smell slightly stale. Nothing very bad or noticable but it's driving me insane. There had been a smell coming from the machine itself so I bought some special cleaner for it and put it in on the hottest cycle. That got rid of the smell in the machine but the clothes are still coming out smelly. I've checked the filter and pipes etc, there are no blockages or anything I can see. What else can I do?

just do the same process again until you get rid of the smell, it is coming a bacteria build up within the back of the outer tub due to low temp washing

18 months ago I had a problem with stale smelling clothes and also from the machine as well. I couldn't figure out what it was for weeks until I noticed water sitting at the bottom at the bottom of the drum, the smell of this stagnant water was terrible. I opened the filter at the bottom of the machine, some fluff and and all the water drained out. I thought this would sort out the problem, it did for a few weeks until there was water sitting in the drum again so I repeated the earlier process, it cleared up but returned again. The next time I pulled the washing machine out and removed the waste water pipe, excess water and loads of fluff came flowing out, after I cleaned up the mess, put the waste water pipe back in and put the washing machine back in its place, its 18 months on and haven't had a problem since. So if your smelly clothes is being caused by stagnant water in the drum this could be the solution.

Do an empty wash on the hottest setting also to clean it

Maybe run an empty washing machine through with a cup of bread soda?? Or maybe vinegar ....Don't they use that stuff for getting smells out of fridges.
