I just got an email reply from an ad I submitted my CV to via Gumtree.

I have been called for an interview this coming week for a summer work position with The Hanly Centre in Cork.

anyone know what they do? The ad didn't say anything specific.

    Chugging. Commission only. Steer clear.

They stand around in city centres with collection boxes shouting 'PLEASE SUPPORT THE HANLY CENTER ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION' over and over. More recently, I have heard of them going door to door but I think they came out and denied this

I worked for these guys for two days a few years ago, selling charity scratch cards, commission only, think I made 12quid in two days, whatever income they're claiming you'll get out of it hinges on selling an almost impossible quantity of cards faster than anyone else consistantly. I wouldn't waste your time.

Think I applied for something with "student summer work" or similar and it turned out to be them.

Yep, that was the ad title, also they claimed you can make up to 70 euro a day. Is it worth even going for the interview?

Not unless you fancy not making a living by annoying people for eight hours a day.

It's not an interview, you have the job, they're just trying to make you feel like that's worth something. You can go if you want, give yourself the practice of meeting a new person in an interview like setting, but it's not something to pin any hopes on.

Is the pay all just commission or is there a basic hourly wage?

All commission. The hanly centre were trailblazers in the 'pi55ing people off for cash' business. They've been at it since the early 90s. You'll get a commission from each sale. As will your supervisor. The charity will get a little bit too.

As endacl said, you'll get a couple of cent off each sale.

Go ahead and set up a dummy email account. Write a dummy cv. Terrible as you can. To the point of criminal. Describe yourself as pretty much unemployable. Send it in to them. Bet you still get called for an 'interview'!

    ;)

Pardon my ignorance but is that not illegal? How do they get past the minimum wage requirements?

Your not an employee. You're an independant contractor working on their behalf

They don't even bother explaining the legalities of "independent contractors", you'll never make enough to get that far.

I remember the Hanley Center operations even when I was a teenager. They would try sell the scratchcards to teenagers even though on the back of the scratchcard itself said it's illegal to sell them to anyone under 18!
