Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Look at the article using a Google Chrome browser, and select the translate option when the page shows up in German.

    google.com/chrome

It can translate most languages including Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc into whatever language you prefer

Am I missing something? How can it be 23bn? That's three times their 2013 income and would surely put them out of business. Very few companies in the world have 23bn lying around in cash.

It makes the plaintiff one of the richest people in the world!

It is punitive damages. RJR will probably try an appeal. If they don't succeed the case will be copied over and over. It is an associated company of British American Tobacco.

She will have her legal fees to pay out of the settlement - which is probably on a contingency fee basis. The fees might be 50%.

Ridiculous sum, even $23m would be crazy. What ever happened to personal responsibility.

I don't think the sum is all that off. Up to now we have seen "manageable" settlements - which the industry can treat as a cost of doing business. Tobacco companies may be able to buy product liability insurance to cover some/all of these costs. If this judgement sticks, there will be no more P/L insurance available to them. Period.

The court is sending a message here to the industry. Goodbye industry. Not before time.

If somebody started off making happy juice emitting widgets today, that were linked to cancer or other disease, they would be shut down by food safety/FDA type regulators etc. The long history of the tobacco industry should not prevent a similar fate for it.
