Bought 2 cows at the mart today for a local farmer .when I rang him for his details he gave me a different name of a herd number.it turns out his brother has a herd number but he's a doctor in Dublin and has no interest in farming .so he had one cow in his brothers herd number . What's his advantage on doing this ? Grant wise .

    All replys appreciated

i know several lads with two herd numbers and i think if one gets locked up on herd test it lets the other free to continue trade, my sister has a herd number as well as myself but she does have an interest in farming too, she only got it this year, she works most days so ill probably be buying cattle for her here and there and she can buy some herself when she can or whatever, she still does know how many cattle she has, what was paid, etc. id say a lot of farmers wives have herd no.s that couldnt tell ya if they had 2 calves or 20 bullocks in it ha

Most larger farms near us have two, when they were willd or bought additional land they kept it active, often in wife's name.

Could be useful for doubling up the income from aeos , reps or disadvantaged payments into a family

I presume it could be split with a lease , if there was enough land

You can but everything has to be separate, entrances, handling facilities, sheds, no different to you and your neighbour

If a TB reactor shows up the fun will start. You might as well get a mobile home for the DVO because they'll be living with ya. I know of a farm with 2 herd nos one spouse had dairy and one suckler. Dairy herd went down bad with tb. Suckler herd used to share same facilities during the winter. When dept found out they made sure the dairy herd was depopulated. Kept testing till only a few cattle remained. There was some blaggarding done as well so the dept made life a living hell for them for 12 months. No pity for them really as the area is a tb blackspot.

We actually have 3 herd numbers. We have suspended 2 as the time spent at paper work would make a Dept officer blush. Separating for testing, movement permits it was just easier all round to have one in use

My cousin has two, one in his mothers name and one in his own.
Department inspections are a pain he says, fairly regular.

What's the advantage of a joint herd number?

    Hi,
I have the same question as Seany1994.
My husband works on his own herd number (Dairy Farmer) and is renting land of a widow who also has a herd number (her husband was a Beef Farmer) and he uses her herd number as well. She has no physical interest in the land other than renting to my husband and claiming grants. My Husband buys / sells animals in her herd number, receives the cheques which she signs the back of and he lodges to his account. There is a lot of movement (on Paper) of these animals from 1 herd to the other. He buys feed for the animals in her name and has tests done in her name and has vet inspections charged to her. I have seen the Invoices addressed to her but c/o of my husband so she does not actually see these Invoices as they come to our home address.
My question is - could it be possible that my husband is taking advantage of this widow. He is renting land from her well below the average rate for the last number of years. I am not sure what grants she is receiving but my husband is receiving a lot of grant payments. Is this illegal?

I think that you would be better off posing the above question directly to your husband.
Alternatively a solicitor or even possibly an agricultural advisor.
I do not think that a public forum like this one is the best place to discuss your issue.

Regarding OP's original query. I do not think that the situation that you were involved in was unusual.
What is wrong with one brother managing the herd for another brother?
I have my own herd number and so has my partner. Two separate farms only separated by a roadway. My partner has shown my cattle along with his cattle when someone is coming to buy. We just explain the situation to the potential buyer.
As long as the accountant and Revenue Commissioners are ok and that the correct movements are completed for the Dept of Agri then I see no problem with it.
