I was cleaning my bike today and realised that 6 or 7 spokes were loose. I tightened them but have a couple of questions for the experts.
    1) how tight should I tighten the spokes
    2) what else should I check routinely

Spokes should not get loose. Each spoke plays its part in making the wheel run true so a loose spoke is not playing its part. You should get the wheel checked / trued and, if the bike is relatively new, ask the selling shop to deal with it under warranty.

You should routinely check the condition of your brakes/cables, tyres (for embedded glass or for frayed sidewalls (likely to blow out)).
