Fed up lending

I have two neighbours and I am getting fed up of them. I know when I see there number on the phone it's always the same story with them.

They are constantly looking to borrow something, tractor, trailers, fertilizer spreader, lawnmower and even the sheep dog. There is no shame in these boys. They would almost ask for the loan of the wife.

I don't want to fall out with anyone but has anyone a good solution to put an end to this begging constantly.

Next time they ask tell them it's broke. I know someone and if he doesn't want to lend he says "it has a bust hoze", heads them off fairly quickly without falling out.

Just say your using it at the moment. .even though its obvious that your not... do this a few times and they should get the message. .

Just tell them from now on you are putting a daily charge on anything they borrow money up front :)

I bought a lovely ifor williams cattle box some years ago. It was great until my neighbour asked for a loan of it.
He would never return it, just unhitch it his shed so I would have to go looking for it. The last time he actually brought
it back complete with a rotten bales of hay and a dead lamb in it. That was enough for me so I cleaned it up and sold it
to a man from Kilkenny. The next day in comes your man asking for a lend of the trailer, I said no problem but you will have
to drive to Kilkenny and ask the fella I sold it too.

I think a good tip is to put 3/8" connectors on all your hoses instead of the more usual 1/2 " ones. Won't stop them borrowing the lawnmower or the dog though.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Telling them to F off and buy their own would be a more effective solution :)

Don't answer the phone? Change your number?

    Stop answering their calls.
Just leave it and then if they say anything about you not answering just say you didn't notice till you were going to bed that they had called.
They'll have to manage some other way and get out of the habit of ringing you.

And lock stuff up so they can't come help themselves.

Simple, look around their yard for any decent machinery and borrow that, they can hardly refuse. Even if you have something similar to do the job, no point you wearing out your own equipment.

We had this problem years ago where a lad kept looking to borrow the cattle trailer. And every time it would come back full of muck, scratched, punctured, lights broken or something. So we put up a sign saying "Trailer for Hire" and that was the end of it!

A habitual borrower commented one day "why would I buy one when you have one" :-(

I told a guy before that the last time something went out it came back damaged and I only realised when I went to use it myself and I won't be lending again. If he wanted to fall out with me over that it was his own problem but I wasn't going to fall out him. I still have great neighbours, some that I give anything to and what they borrow comes back better than it left (eg. Washed, greased and full of diesel.) and some that know not to ask anymore. Win win.

Course they do as they don't have to pay for machinery

A friend had a similar problem with a trailer. Almost seemed like it was on loan more than in his shed. So he filled it with turf. Next time he was asked "No problem - oh but you'll have to unload the turf and put it back on when you're finished".

Kept it like that for a couple of weeks, problem solved.

id rather buy something than borrow, Uncle has a jcb that would be woeful handy to borrow but its a case of doing a half days repair work before getting it…. usual ones are she's bone dry of diesel, has a puncture, never greased and hoses burst to beat the band.

Now we just pay a chap to come in and do what we need. The uncle has father plagued to help move cattle etc etc. he's easily rang to go down 3 evenings a week

Am I the only one that has a good experience borrowing and loaning gear? My fertiliser spreader lives in the neighbours yard and his sprayer in mine
