I see Antrim won the Ulster senior hurling championship final last Sunday.

Antrim as far as I know are also in the early rounds of the Leinster hurling championship. ( I think )

Can anybody tell me what the story here is ?

Are Antrim still involved in the all ireland hurling championship due to winning ulster or wha ?

The Ulster championship now has no bearing on the All Ireland.

Nope. The Ulster SHC is run separately to the All Ireland SHC which is why the likes of Tyrone, Fermanagh and Monaghan have competed in it in the last few years (though this year it was just Antrim, Derry, Down, Armagh and Donegal).

Antrim are already in the Leinster championship and they will remain so unless they fail to qualify from the Leinster pre qualifier group or get relegated to Ring Cup hurling. Unlike Antrim, Galway are automatically entered into the Leinster championship along with Dublin, Kilkenny, Offaly and Wexford.

This year, Antrim qualified in first place in the Leinster qualifier group (where they defeated each of Laois, Westmeath, Carlow and London). They faced Wexford in the Leinster championship and were well beaten. They were then drawn in the All-Ireland qualifier first round where they were narrowly defeated at home by Offaly, and with that their competitive season was over.

The Ulster championship was restored in 1989 after an absence of roughly four decades, the champion qualified directly to the All-Ireland semi finals from 1989 to 1996.

In 1997, the Ulster champion was pushed back to entering at the All-Ireland quarter final stage until 2004, from 2005 onwards the Ulster championship has been downgraded to an independent championship with no bearing on the All-Ireland championships at any level. Essentially, it is now meaningless.

Since 1989, the Ulster champion has only won one All-Ireland game, in 1989 when Antrim shocked Leinster champions Offaly by defeating them by 4-15 to 1-15, that game is largely remembered for Offaly's players forming a guard of honour and applauding Antrim off the pitch.

Antrim have won every Ulster final since 2002.

The 2013 Ulster final was played in early 2014.

Let this be a warning to anyone who thinks that a viable revamped football championship is one where the provincial championships are not part of the All Ireland.
