A rumour I've heard more than once, Noel Fox visited him for a lesson after being one of the most prolific amateur winners Ireland has ever seen, Torrance. apparently asked him to hit some warm upshots as he went about his business. On sound alone Torrance told him he didn't have what it took to make it as a touring pro.

An amazing amateur and great player that didn't make it; whether the story is true I don't know.

A great coach, no doubt. RIP

I heard that story too. Apparently stood with his back to him and could tell by the sound of the strike that he wasn't good enough. Was proved right too.

    RIP

    On Twitter earlier.

RT @GolfweekTait Rory McIlroy once went to Bob Torrance. Bob watched Rory hit shots & said "I can’t improve on that.” Refused to work w/ him

The story is definitely not true. Quite the opposite Bob Torrance would have been incredibly encouraging to anyone looking to make it in the pro game and given his time and advice generously to these players.

Yes it's quite obvious it's not a true story, but it's still quite humerous as to how many people tell the story as been kinda factual, without actuallly realising that in order for Bob to say that in the first place, it would mean he didn't put much stock in his own teaching ability if he wasn't at least willing to try.
