    Hi all.

Thanks to sponsors Friends First upping their backing it will now be open to A1 and A2 riders.

The program of races, run on Sunday, September 14, on a hilly, twisting 24km circuit around Wicklow, will consist of an A4 event, an A3 event and the showpiece Laragh Classic, seeing some of the country’s best riders compete for the Laragh Classic cobble.

We will post further details here, on the Laragh Classic Facebook page and our Club Site.

    Fellow riders,

After it's inaugural running last year, the Friends First Laragh Classic on Sunday, September 14 will this year be open to all categories of riders. There will be three races - A1/A2, A3, A4 - with generous sponsorship from Friends First and bonus prizes from Velo Revolution, FitzCycles and Parcel Zone.

The course, inspired by Europe's one-day classics, will be exactly the same as last year: Friends First Laragh Classic circuit.

Entry costs €15 and opens today and we would advise anyone keen to take it on to enter early as the startlists were filled well before the closing date in 2013.

    ONLINE ENTRY IS NOW OPEN

Full details can be found at the Friends First Laragh Classic homepage.

We hope to see you in September, but in the meantime happy cycling.

I raced this last year in A4 - very well organised.

A great race for you A4s who are not fans of bunch sprints. Nice hill in the middle which breaks things up nicely and if you can stay with the front group on the climb you should be there or there abouts come the finish line.

    Also fantastic food afterwards

This was my favourite race in A4 last year. A handful of us drilled it up the climb on the second lap and whittled the main group down to about 15 riders. What larks. It was a proper filthy day and gave it a real 'race of falling leaves' feel. My parents even came down to see what the heck this bike racing lark I'd gotten into was all about.

One lad from Fixx was up the road and rode the whole thing on his own, but he's long since departed the A4 ranks (A1 now I think) so nobody has to worry about him!

The climb is understated by the mapmyride profile, it's more like 5% for 2k. It'll hurt.

Looking forward to this, sounds lke a poper race and STCC seem to be so well organised that it will be one of the best of the year.

For anyone doing this this weekend let me make one request. Keep the place tidy! Lets not have gel wrappers etc... thrown all over the lovely scenery.

    From page:
"We take it over for one day in September for the Friends First Laragh Classic and we figured we owed the community for that, so €1 from every Laragh Classic entry will go towards Laragh’s Tidy Towns effort.

It will help keep Laragh looking as the countryside should, without the gel wrappers in the hedges and the bidons in the ditches, and we hope our fellow cyclists will help further."

Fair play Tiernans, that's top stuff.

KOH will take place the second time up the climb. Just after the start you go over the climb for the first time , next time over is the KOH.

***Online Entries will close tomorrow, Friday 12th, at 4pm.***

Plenty of space in A1/A2 so entries for that race will be available on the day. We expect to have a limited number of A4 and A3 spots available too.

Anyone know what the expected start time for the A4 race is?

Yes indeed. Everyone will roll out of race HQ together though so be there in plenty of time.

Looks like it's going to be a cracker of a day.

Laragh classic is a Paris Roubaix style classics race is it? What's the circuit and surface like? Would I get away with 22mm tyres?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,125 ✭✭✭daragh_

Have a look at the racebook for details of the circuit. Lumpy Wicklow roads.

Here's the link to the road book >> http://660835365.r.worldcdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Laragh_Classic_Racebook.pdf

It's a twisty, bumpy course with some sections of pretty rough surfaces. It's all marked on the maps in the link above.

The road from the top of the hill to Garryduff crossroads is very rough and bumpy with the odd bit of dusty gravel thrown in. Be careful!!

Bit of deja-vu today, after marshalling at the Leinster RR yesterday and watching Shaw, McKenna and another open a big lead over the field, I arrived for a coffee stop in Laragh today to see what looked like to me the same trio do exactly the same thing, serious men.

It must have been a nightmare trying to run that race through the traffic up there today, well done to all involved for pulling it off.
