Federal Express, odds of extra charges?

Bought something from Japan the other day, and as a result of nothing but my own error, selected International Express Courier for shipping rather than International Express Mail.

So it's coming by Fed Ex instead of the Japanese/Irish Postal system.

The value of the item is only about 16 euro, postage was maybe 18 euro.

Not a very valuable item, and under any threshold for customs purposes afaik..if you exclude shipping costs.

Is it more than likely Fed Ex will combine the shipping charges and merchandise cost so they can in turn stick me for a handling fee?

It's not going to be a massive amount...but the prospect is just vaguely annoying, and i'm curious about it.

    Hi,
Anything over €22 is subject to VAT by customs.

The price used to calculate the amount is the item price plus shipping. If your seller left €16 on the customs declaration, you might not get charged, but if they had €34, you are liable to get charged.
