Insurance with penalty points

Hello all, just looking for a bit of advice/opinions here.

I want to buy a car as I've been driving vans over the last 2 years, and I'm sick of it. I was always into my cars but work forced my hand and at 19 I bought my first van.
I'm now 22, and I want to buy something that I enjoy driving for the weekends and that I can root at myself, as I can't afford to fudge up the van by tinkering at it myself.
My heart is set on either a Toyota altezza or a Lexus is200.
    The only problem is insurance.
I have 6 penalty points, and the only no claims to my name is 2 years on the commercial policy, which is not transferable to a private policy afaik.

Does anyone here have any idea what I'd be likely to be charged for third party fire and theft?

Also any advice on who to insure with?? Currently have the van insured with Fbd.

Iv been getting online quick quotes of between 1200/1600 euro but I presume it will be higher in reality

Also I have the option of putting car in family members name with myself named.

Thanks for reading, appreciate any help

I'm afraid nobody here can tell what it will cost or who will be the cheapest. Insurance is so dependant on the individual that there are too many unknown variables involved for anyone to offer anything other than a pure guess.

However trying to get a reasonable quote if any with 6 points and no NCB in your own name will be tough. My advice would be to contact a few brokers and ask them to shop around for you. They may have more flexibility with insurance companies in these circumstances than you as an individual. Another thing would be imo to try on the IS200 over the Altezza as the Altezza would have a bit of a skanger image or reputation with insurance companies so they will most probably have a higher loading.

Id say you are going to find it next to impossible to insure an Altezza given your age, lack of NCB and your penalty points. Ring around and see if any brokers can do anything for you, but with the likes of XS Direct now gone, I dont see anyone quoting you. The IS200 might be more realistic; I dont know how they are seen by insurers. Although given that they are most likely seen as a higher class of car, your only option might be to get something smaller and keep your nose clean for a couple of years, build up a NCB and let some of the points expire, and revisit the Altezza when you are a bit older and have a healthier driving and insurance record.

    Thank for yer replies lads.

Yeah I knew the the altezza had a worse image than the is200, it's just that's the car I want. The is200 is a bit of a compromise for me, but I the plan is to make an altezza replica out of it if I have to. :-P

I understand the point about getting a handier car for a bit to get NBC built up and that, but tbh I'd struggle to justify it to myself to put money into a car I don't want/like. I'd nearly prefer to take the hit to the wallet to insure the car I want. Mental I know but that's me all out.

Again, thanks for yet time, much appreciated

Go online and look for quotes, at your age do dummy quotes for e.g. a micra, that will give you a good starting point.

You possibly won't get online quotes with the penalty points though

    To be honest.

If I was you, id just stick with the van !

For the cost of running two vehicles just for a part time car it wont be worth it. And I cant see any company giving you a quote with 6 points on a car like that unless your willing to pay 3k just for insurance.

Never mind the additional tax, nct , maintainece.

    Forget it imo.

Have you gotten real quotes or just quick quotes? Quick quotes mean nothing; you cant get a quote based on a being a 22 year old male living in Dublin driving a 2.0 car or whatever small handful of criteria they ask!

I usually get online quotes initially by filling in all the important information but leaving out my contact details. This gives me an idea of the price, but leaves me room to haggle when I ring them (I find if they can find your online quote they will just stick to that, whereas over the phone it might end up better).

    Thanks for replying.

I understand your point, but iv thought long and hard about this, iv been entertains the thought of a weekend motor for over a year. Now that in in a position that im almost certain i can afford it (depending on insurance) I'm just testing the waters.

Tax and test will be manageable, most maintainence I can manage myself, and have friends that will lend a hand in exchange for a few pints. Insurance seems to be the only stumbling block.

The father has offered to insure it in his name with me named on policy, this looks the best option as his car is near fudged so might suit all parties if I was to buy a car and let him off in it.

Cheers for all the replies, much appreciated

    you have 4 problem,

    -6 points
    -young Age
    -No Claims (Lack of)
    -Altezza

No body wioth any sense would want you on the book with this combo
Somethings got to give & it the first three are fixed

If that's the road we go down then technically yes.

He would have the use of it when I'm away at work. Whether he'll want to drive it or not is another story.

Not ideal for either of us but if needs must...

    Yeah I know. Disaster :-(

Tbh it's looking more like an is200, cheaper to buy and to insure. Surely that will count for something what with Lexus being more of a luxury brand compared to Toyota being so popular with young lads ( not so much anymore I know but still have a bad rep with insurers)

    I'm 25.
    Have an is200 sport.
Have 5 penalty points ( another year before they come off)
But I do have 6 years no claims bonus.
I paid €983 on my last renewal in June 14.
I Think the first quote I got from my broker following my informing them of my points was €4500 odd (BMW 320d I had at that time).
Try Britton brokers in donegal town.
Also try O Dowd and Donnelly.
They wouldn't give me a quote on an altezza.

Your father won't be able to insure it unless he has an insurable interest in the car, e.g. leased or paid by him or your mother. I'm not sure if that interest extends to property belonging to adult offspring, but I doubt it.

So, what if you put the car in your father's name? Well yes, he probably can insure it but insurance companies are not silly, they recognise what's going on here., it's called "fronting" and if they find he's not the actual main driver you could be in bother if a claim is made against his policy.
Are you already a named driver on his policy? If you're not then a father, presumably with a car of his own, buying and insuring another car and suddenly adding his 22yr old as a named driver would be like waiving a red flag imo.

Yeah I'm a named driver on his existing policy
