Oh dear, Edinburgh Fringe is HUGE and is on during the entire month of August. Every bed, couch, camp bed and floor in the city is likely to be booked up already at this stage unless you are willing to spend big bucks or go a bit further afield outside of the city I would think.

The only places I have stayed in Edinburgh was TuneHotels.com in Haymarket. A 10 minute walk to Prince's Street or a few mins on the bus or else Jury's hotel but that is very central so likely full. My parents also have stayed in and recommend http://www.bluerainbowapartments.com/ if you want to give them a try :)

Some festival? It's the second biggest thing in the city every year after Hogmanay. Check out the Tune hotel at Haymarket. It's like the Ryanair of hotels, everything is extra but location is great and rooms are decent if compact

There will be lots of things on - comedy, theatre, etc. and from what I hear (I haven;t been yet :( ) there will be people in the streets trying to entice you to come to all their shows :)

You can look up everything that is on here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/

Premier Inn! cheap but consistent and decent product- though with the fringe they probably have huge prices too!

Hilton Grosvenor near Haymarket, reasonable and comfortable.

You'll not find anything 'reasonable' during the Fringe, but it'll be worth it. The buzz in Edinburgh during it is fantasitic.
I stayed at this hostel (I'd never stayed at a hostel before but because of the Fringe being on it was all we could book at short notice), it wasn't cheap either but was clean and right off the Royal Mile. Google Smart City Hostels.

I've also stayed at Novotel and Mercure on different occasions. Both were nice and equal distances from Royal Mile.

+ 1 for the Tune hotel very comfy and a good price too.

If you're in Edinburgh in August you can't NOT go to the festival. It's on everywhere. Streets, pubs, theatres, shops, phone boxes. Everywhere. A lot of it free and alot of it is fantastic.

    World's best festival.

Would you consider staying in one of the nearby towns on the train route? Save yourself a packet and still be in easy commute, there's great public transport via buses too.
