Fibre Broadband - Askeaton, Co. Limerick

Hi,

I was wondering is there any explanation for the delay and now seemingly removal of a date for Fibre Broadband arriving to Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Originally it was slated for a date of May '14 which has come and gone, this was then pushed back month by month and now on the Eircom line checker site it says nothing at all about Fibre Broadband as you can see from my attached screenshot. (As for upto 24Mb being available, I currently get 1.5Mb as a max but that's a different matter) [img][/img]2ntemma.jpg

Checking the Eircom Network map, it says work is in progress of which I have also included this screenshot [img][/img]122cmsk.jpg

So rather than the standard answer of that Eircom usually provide, I was hoping for perhaps a more in-depth explanation and satisfactory answer rather than being fobbed off like so many on here have, with generic responses about indicative dates and guidelines etc.

Given the absolutely shocking standard of our current broadband service, it is obvious for it to be in Eircoms best interests to bring Fibre Broadband to the town as soon as possible. I understand delays happen and sometimes Eircom has no control over these matters (damaged infrastructure from the storm a few months back etc) and I appreciate work does seem to be going on with the presence of Eircom vans working on the two cabinets and the exchange in the town etc. but Its just frustrating to keep seeing the date pushed back and pushed back and now as stated above seemingly removed from the line check site. Newcastle West experienced a delay of some 15 months in the arrival of their Fibre Broadband and I would hope Askeaton isn't headed down a similar path.

I know there are lots of towns all over Ireland in a similar position, some a lot larger than ours but I don't believe this should dictate the roll-out and that once a date is given but not adhered to, that the location whatever its population may be deserve some little bit of a reason as to why they haven't got a service they are expecting.

I await your response......

Its the same in Newcastle West, delay after delay.

Pushed back to 6th of August now and we all know its going to be pushed back again.

Askeaton was showing as live for efibre last month.

They have no idea what they are doing

There was also a Vodafone rep going door to door in the town a few weeks back who was saying Fibre Broadband would be available 'imminently in the coming weeks'

On a good day in Askeaton 'BROADBAND' gets up to about 1.6Mb putting it in the bottom few percentile in the country for speed which is absolutely pathetic, the promise of having Fibre arriving is the only saving grace but of course this keeps getting pushed back and back.

Hi cupthehand1

While I can understand the disappointment created by the delays and the changing information provided by the coverage map I can assure you that plans have not been fully abandoned rather some dates have been delayed and some areas are in consideration for a new date and until the new dates are rescheduled the areas affected will not be listed on the coverage map.

I have been in contact with efibre operations to see if they can offer me more information surrounding Askeaton, they did specifically mention that they cannot give a guaranteed date but in consideration of progress so far in planning they do feel that efibre should reach Askeaton by the end of September - although we would ask you to treat this timeframe as indicative at this stage.

Thanks
Al

Much sooner that suggested to me by operations but good news nonetheless.

Hi cupthehand1, the online map is for illustrative purposes and a  general guide to the roll, unfortunately several factors can affect activation dates and we do roll out to cabinets as close as we can to those date shown on map. We do understand that changes in dates can cause confusion and frustration. We do appreciate your patience and we will do our best here to advise on availability dates.

It's no longer on the coverage map now. Can you ask the operations team again please? This is hugely important to businesses in the area.

Is Fibre coming to Askeaton or not? Can you please investigate?

Hi thewheel2.0

Askeaton has been provisionally removed from the map due to a number of delays resulting in an efibre launch date not yet being in sight. I've discussed this with operations who have informed me that is likely that we should have more news on Askeaton in early 2015 however as the date has not yet been agreed it would be misleading to advise an activation date at this moment in time.
Thanks

And when it does come will it only be in the town centre or will it come up this road here:
https://www.google.ie/maps/dir/52.6073236,-8.9602287//@52.6056025,-8.9587826,1361m/data=!3m1!1e3

There is an exchange at the beginning of that road so it's surely possible to bring Fibre down our road?

I spoke to an Eircom engineer and he told me the e-fibre was installed in Askeaton and just waiting to be turned on from head office.

The following is taken from an email I received in mid-JUNE. All sign of Eircom/KN vans or works in progress seem to have disappeared from the streets at the locations of both cabinets in the town.

Hi *****,

Further to your email below.

With regard to Askeaton, yes, it is in our current deployment plan, we are presently deploying FTTC which will enable approximately 400 premises in the Askeaton area  access to a high speed fibre broadband network with speeds upto 100M/bs.  The works relating to Askeaton should be completed by the end of this Summer. In addition to Askeaton, we are working on Newcastle West which is forecasted for completion Aug. 2014 and Inch St Lawrence with work forecasted for completion by end of the year.

The forecasted ready for order date is end of August 2014 for 275 premises and end of September 2014 for remainder,What I mean by Ready for Order – Once our work on the cabinets is completed we then must give a 4 week notification period to all of the service providers that our connected to our NGA network.  This is a ComReg regulation. The 4 week window is in place to allow all the operators get their network and systems ready for sales and activations.

Hi, Askeaton has of today re-appeared on the eFibre coverage map with a launch date of October '14 and also the broadband line-checker on eircoms site is now giving a revised date of Oct '14 for deployment, can anyone from eircom confirm that there has been an escalation in the status of Askeaton and that we might in fact see fibre broadband this side of 2015.....

Askeaton once again totally removed from eircoms Broadband line checker, now displaying

"Your home is not in an eFibre area
However eircom is rolling out eFibre across Ireland"

The frustration continues..........

Why is eircoms line checker on this page saying fibre broadband will be available in December '14 (7 months later than originally advertised date of May '14)

BUT eircoms line checker on this page says we are not in a fibre enabled area, even though the map on the same page indicates it's arriving in December '14

Pushed back again and again and again, no definitive or satisfactory answers from eircom, just the usual standard response given out bout indicative and guideline dates and lately just completely ignored and passed over altogether.

The latest update from eircom regarding eFibre in Askeaton.........

".........The two cabinets are planned for commissioning at the latest next week.  Once the cabinets have been commissioned there is a 4 week notification period.  This is a ComReg regulation, the 4 week window is in place to allow all retail operators prepare both their networks, systems and marketing campaigns.

With that in mind operators will be in a position to accept orders Mid-January.

However ********* if your number is 061-398*** which is the number I have on file, then your premises is actually fed directly by the local exchange not the cabinets. The good news is eircom has developed a solution to deliver high speed broadband services to exchange fed customers, it is called evdsl and we are currently piloting the solution in four locations nationwide.  This solution needs to be approved and we are working with the regulator and the telecoms industry to ensure that approval is given as soon as possible.

I unfortunately cannot give you a deployment or go live date as we have to wait for approval before we can factor in the exchange upgrades into our deployment plan

As soon as I have an update I will let you know."

Hi cupthehand1

Yes it looks like your line is connected directly to the exchange, as previously advised a solution called evdsl has is now awaiting approval from the regulator before it can be deployed.

Thanks

Hi Alan,

could you tell me, at present is there any online method for checking whether a line is directly connected to the exchange as I would like to know about my parents house too to see whether or not they would be able to avail of eFibre straight from the off.

No there's no online method but if you PM me the land line number I am now able to escalate this to find out if directly connected (should have a reply within a few hours).

Cheers

Fibre broadband is going LIVE Wednesday 11th of February for all those that it's available to. For others who live in areas between the two cabinets in the town (namely Main St., West Sq., Abbey View, The Quay etc.) and are thus directly connected to the exchange, the wait continues as cabinet ASN1_E01 awaits completion and activation but when this will be is anyones guess....

Hi The Omen 666

The maximum range from a cabinet is 2KM and if you look at the plans on the map above it should give you a better idea on availability. Basically
availability of efibre is based on the rollout and launch of fibre (VDSL) cabinets serving specific locations, unlike regular broadband where is available upon an enabled exchange. Ultimately distance from the exchange will not come in to play as in terms of efibre it's distance from the cabinet that counts (2KM).

Thanks
Al

Thanks Alan, that's a good explanation. So when should we expect "ASN1_E01" to go live? The other two in Askeaton have dates on that map but this one does not.

Thanks Alan, my parents live outside askeaton on the road to Foynes. Is it possible to find out if their connection is direct to exchange or to the cab. To my knowledge, there is an underground eircom access point outside their house. Is this likely a cabinet as eircom engineers have been there working in it at times over the years.
